A message from MLID. You should probably come out and walk the proposed trail this Saturday at 10am:
This Saturday November 20th at 10 AM the Yorktown Recreation Commission will be meeting at the top of Fenimore/Heyward at the water tanks and taking a tour of the proposed trail in Tall Timbers Park. Although they walked an earlier version of the trail, when they held a public information session in July residents of Ivy Road turned out in very vocal opposition to the trail being built (it was going to destroy wildlife, kids would no longer be safe in back yards, etc.).
We revised the trail route several times, moving it as far into the center of the park as possible to be far from any homes. As proposed, the trail is a one mile loop, with entrances off of Scofield and at the water tanks at the top of "Jones Hill."
We need people to turn out Saturday morning to show that there is interest and support for the trail. If they only see and hear from some vocal residents at Ivy Road, the trail proposal will be dead in the water.
After our successful trail at Rock Hill Park, we were asked by a community resident if we could do a trail on the other side of the lake in "Tall Timbers Park." Working under the guidance of Walt and Jane Daniels of the NY NJ Trail Conference, we prepared a draft trail route and had an environmental study done to ensure we were not disturbing any endangered species. We cleared that hurdle, but we will only get permission from the Rec Commission if they see there is interest.
You can join for part of the hike, or the entire loop (about 45 minutes). Wear sturdy shoes, tick protection, and old clothes. Note that there really isn't parking up by the water tanks, so I would encourage walking there, carpooling, or parking elsewhere. If you must come by car, I can direct you to some parking spots at existing beaches. Come by 9:45 to allow time to walk up to the water tanks.
I hope you can come out and help us get approval to make this Mohegan Lake Improvement
District project a success! Please pass this on and bring your neighbors as well.
