KORC - Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition

KORC - Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition KORC is a coalition of Keweenawan's and friends who are dedicated to preserving access to our lands for recreation, science, and protection of our environment.

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition was created in 2019 to bring together a variety of user groups with one shared goal: to protect the Keweenaw's vast landscapes for everyone, forever. Whether you bike, snowmobile, hunt, hike, or birdwatch, we need your help to make this vision a reality. Whether you are a powder hound on skis or a hunter that values well-managed and undeveloped forests, pr

otecting the Keweenaw's at-risk landscapes is vital if we are to preserve our local traditions. The loss of lands owned by absentee investment firms affects us all. It is for this reason that we have united to stand up for our entire community. By bringing together groups under our umbrella, the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition can speak with one voice to better advocate for our shared interests. Become a member today! Any level of support is welcome, but your membership is key to the mission of KORC. www.keweenawoutdoorrecreation.org/support

📣📣📣 KORC Call to Action: PAVE BROCKWAY MOUNTAIN DRIVE!!! 📣📣📣
‼️ LET'S SUPPORT THE KEWEENAW COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION! ‼️

➡️ Let Governor Whitmer, Elected Officials, and MDOT know that you love Brockway Mountain Drive – and funding is needed to pave it.

ℹ️ Brockway Mountain Drive:
* Top scenic auto route in Michigan since the 1930's.
* National Register of Historic Places.
* Scenic Byway route.
* Over 150,000 visitors annually (May-October).
* Has not been paved since the 1960’s!

ℹ️ The Issue:
* No funding source available to pave the Drive since the 1960's.
* Keweenaw County Road Commission has a conceptual plan:
* Repave and bring road up to modern safety standards and maintainability.
* Current cost estimate = $10,000,000
* This plan has already been sent to Legislators and MDOT - with no results.

➡️ You Can Help:
* Head over to the Call To Action page on our website for full info, contacts, and sample letters.
* KeweenawOutdoorRecreation.org/calls-to-action-pave-brockway-mountain-drive
* Write/email Governor Whitmer, State Representative Markkanen, State Senator Ed McBroom, and MDOT officials today.
* Share this post with friends, family members, and anyone who loves Brockway Mountain Drive.

👏 YOUR VOICE MATTERS! THANK YOU!!

This community exists because people show up in every role, and EMS is one of the most important. Most of our local crews are volunteers with regular jobs and regular lives, who drop everything when a call comes in.

Out here, that matters more than most riders realize. In a lot of rural areas, EMS response times run several hours longer than in cities, and the distance between a trailhead and real medical care can be significant. That gap gets covered by people who train on their own time, carry radios on their days off, and show up regardless of weather, terrain, or how far into the woods someone went down.

To every EMS worker, first responder, and volunteer medic who's ever answered that call for a rider: thank you. You're doing a hard job in a hard place, mostly on your own time, and mostly without anyone knowing your name. You're a gift to this whole community, and one worth celebrating loudly. Thank you Copper Harbor Fire Department, Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, and Keweenaw Search and Rescue.

A real reminder, from us to you:

The riding here can be serious and remote. Help isn't always five minutes away, and the trails don't care how experienced you are. So do your part: wear a helmet, ride with a buddy when you can, and be ready with a plan if things go sideways.
