Over the past couple weeks we have received reports of adopted horses being in concerning conditions.
The horses reported range from 2026 foals to senior horses.

The most common excuse has been related to the specific horse’s age;
“He’s growing”
“She’s in her twenties”
“She’s being ridden a lot more now.”
“He’s just fit, he’s being ridden a lot”

I think the most concerning part about these reports has been the lack of recognition by the adopter, or responsible/involved adults, that there is an obvious concern. Just when I think they surely can’t be that oblivious, they truly seem to be just that… and deeply offended!

Our friends at Heart of Phoenix said it best, and on repeat… Feed Your Horses Better!

Don't make excuses.

Feed your horses enough.

Hard keepers mean feed them more.

Old horses may need diet changes.

Feed horses better.

Stop riding them when they are thin.

Stop breeding them when they are thin.

Stop buying them when you can't afford them.

Stop liking photos of other's horses that are neglected, like it's fine.

Feed your horses enough..

Feed your horses, and stop being cheap, lazy and full of excuses.

Hey local friends…

Are you going to be out and about at the Portage County Fair this weekend? Stop by the Draft Horse Barn, and the arena to see our handsome Focus Ambassador, Thunder. While there, be sure to read all about what he has been up to since being surrendered.

We are also sending our best to all adopters who are competing this week with their Focus horses. There is truly nothing better than seeing our horses SHINE with the kid who loves them.

Alpine, Originally known as Aspen, is one of our earliest 2026 foals. She and her buddy were adopted back in March. Her adopter, Sam, did a fantastic job with teaching basic skills during their time together. But, unfortunately, she needed to return to us for a hernia repair procedure.

Because of some generous contributions to our last FB fundraiser, she was able to have the hernia repaired Saturday morning. It was also a great opportunity to have her feet trimmed as well.

We would be remiss to not mention our gratitude for the absolute best women in their respective professions. Dr Naylor, her Tech Hannah, and our farrier Lori McBride have been such a blessing to every horse here at Focus. We are so lucky to have them on our team!

Do you all remember Lindsey from early this year?
Her age and breed kept several folks from wanting to meet her. Thankfully, none of the others showed up for her, because she ended up exactly where she needed to be!

The love, and the bond that has been formed already is palpable in these videos. We love everything about them, from the giggles to the calm willingness for whatever is asked. She is giving them an experience they will cherish forever. 🩷

“What color will my foal be?” The honest answer is… we usually don’t know!

Without knowing a foal’s parentage or genetic color testing, it’s impossible to predict what color they will mature into. We can tell you what color they appear to be today, but Mother Nature often has other plans.

Many foals are born with coats that look nothing like the color they’ll have as adults. They may shed into a completely different shade, develop dapples, dark points, or even lighten dramatically over their first year or two.

These photos of just a few of our Nurse Mare Foals are a perfect example—same foals, different stages, and very different colors!

Watching their true colors emerge is one of the most fun parts of seeing them grow.

✨ Meet Tess ✨

This lovely lady is Tess, a 20-year-old Quarter Horse mare looking for her next chapter.

Tess was once a very accomplished halter horse, and she still carries herself with that unmistakable presence. She has a kind eye, a gentle heart, and loves attention from people she trusts.

You may notice her unique topline. No, she’s not part llama. ❤️ At some point in her past, Tess appears to have suffered a fracture to her withers. It’s also possible that years of poor saddle fit caused the bony structures to shift toward the right side of her withers. While we can’t change her past, we can give her the future she deserves.

Tess is broke to ride and is happiest with someone with at least some horse experience who can understand her physical limitations, recognize when she’s communicating discomfort, and continue building her confidence with patience and kindness.

She is incredibly sweet and deserves someone who will spoil her, love her, and appreciate her for the wonderful mare she is.

Baby’s first hoof trim can be a little scary, but it’s so much easier with a friend by your side. 🩷

This month alone our farrier bill topped $600, and in August one of our foals will be returning for umbilical hernia surgery. (See the attached estimate for that expense)
