Neko Wilson is released from Navajo County Jail in Holbrook on Oct. 23, 2020. He spent 15 months there for violating his probation from a 2006 conviction.

AFJ is excited to announce that we will host our first virtual-zoom meeting tonight at 6:00 p.m.

During the zoom meeting we will discuss a number of topics confronting MCS' students and their families, including, but not limited to the following areas:

1. What the district has done and/or not done to implement Dr. O’konofua's recommendations from his findings.
2. CRLA will provide a Brief Presentation on the new LCAP funding (i.e., the new formula of how Modesto City Schools receives its money and how it’s expected to be allocated).

3. We want to explore with our members and community activists what are the other educational issues that families are experiencing and want us to address with the district such as eliminating campus police and redirecting the funding to other areas of concerns, educational access issue relating to remote learning, and lost learning and instruction time of students.

AFJ understands that these are difficult, challenging, and uncertain times for all due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to make sure that no child or family is left behind as the new academic year starts which is why your voice, concerns, and safety matter to us.

Investing in children, making sure they get the right start, is worth it.

We look forward to seeing and hearing from each of you soon.

Jacque was on UpFront on KPFA.org / 91.7FM this morning talking about his two brothers, Neko & Lance, who are currently incarcerated on non-violent drug charges in AZ & CA respectively; the horrendous conditions of prisons during this pandemic, including the lack of communication from prison authorities with families of incarcerated loved ones; how his brother Lance - who tested COVID positive with symptoms 3 wks ago has not yet seen a doctor, and whose phone usage was cut off for 3 wks - has been named a lead plaintiff in an ACLU class action suit against Terminal Island Federal Prison.

To get Neko out in Arizona - who was picked up on a 17yo ma*****na warrant and is fighting it in the AZ Supreme Court for violating his due process rights - people can email the DA’s office & ask them to set bail. I want to thank Mano Raju and the San Francisco Public Defender’s office for hosting CourtWatch and for inspiring the next generation of lawyers.

Today, with the help of AFJ, BSU, and moot court, more than 30 Modesto City Schools’ Students were able to participate in CourtWatch in San Francisco. The students were lucky to watch opening statements in a criminal trial.

The students also took a brief site-seeing tour of San Francisco.

I’m forever grateful to the forward-thinking and amazing teachers, such as Renaldo Rucker, Jr., and Elizabeth Garmon, who sacrificed their day to reward their students.

During my legal career, I have experienced many "mountaintop moments". I have also encountered my fair share of UGLY, but the "real evil" I have witnessed in the world is the "good people" I know who ignore the injustice of others, who turn a deaf ear to the torture of others, and who turn their backs to the suffering of others. The haunting screams of those who have been denied justice is what keeps me awake at night, and what motivates me to get out of bed in the morning. My frightening realization is that these "good people" who take a "silent stand" are the same "good people" who stood silently by during the holocaust, during slavery, and during the crucifixion. On this special holiday weekend reserved for one of the greatest men of all time, I urge all the "good people", friends, and brothers and sisters I know to stop taking a "SILENT STAND"! Stand up for RIGHTEOUSNESS. Stand up for TRUTH. Stand up for JUSTICE!
