Stanislaus Audubon

Stanislaus Audubon Get out there and enjoy the birds. Support research into maintaining, restoring, and understanding native ecosystems, particularly those of birds.

To accomplish this mission we will...

Promote scientifically sound conservation strategies for the protection of native ecosystems and demonstrate the value of conservation to the community. Educate our community about the benefits of preserving and enjoying nature, focusing on youth education programs, public outreach, and field trips. Collaborate with the National Audubon Society, Audubon-Calif

ornia, Audubon Chapters, and other organizations to accomplish our common goals. The birds Audubon pledges to protect differ in color, size, behavior, geographical preference, and countless other ways. By honoring and celebrating the equally remarkable diversity of the human species, Audubon will bring new creativity, effectiveness and leadership to our work throughout the hemisphere.

STANISLAUS AUDUBON FIELD TRIP
Point Reyes National Seashore
Leades: John Harris and Sal Salerno
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5 9:00 a.m. - ALL DAY

Point Reyes is noted for uncommon birds, especially during fall migration, when off-course migrants show up at several locations on the Outer Point. Specific stops will depend on what has been reported in the days prior to the trip. Meet at Bear Valley Visitor Center (1 Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road, Point Reyes Station) at 9:00 A.M.

This is an ALL DAY trip, so bring water and a lunch. It can be foggy or windy on the Outer Point, so be prepared for variable weather conditions. Please RSVP to John Harris at [email protected], and let us know if you are interested in carpooling. Carpoolers will likely meet in front of the Riverbank Target.

UPCOMING STANISLAUS AUDUBON ZOOM PROGRAM -
THE MOST OVERLOOKED BIRDS IN NORTH AMERICA: FEMALES
Joanna Wu Friday, September 12, 2025 – 7:00 p.m.

Joanna Wu is a PhD student studying female birds in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA. She previously worked at the National Audubon Society and is a member of the Galbatross Project, a group of birders, scientists, writers, and conservationists who are passionate about spreading awareness about female birds.

Female birds often hide in plain sight because they are typically drabber in plumage and more inconspicuous than male birds. There is also an unconscious bias towards male birds in birdwatching, photography, and even in our scientific knowledge about birds. This presentation explores the history of focus on male birds, why it’s important to focus on females, and gives female bird identification tips. Joanna challenges the audience to confront their own biases towards a more equitable birding experience. Register in advance for this meeting:

UPCOMING STANISLAUS AUDUBON FIELD TRIP!
Knights Ferry Recreation Area Leader: CeCe Hurst
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2025 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Celebrate Biodiversity Day with us on a guided nature walk through the beautiful Knights Ferry Recreation Area! We’ll be using the iNaturalist app to observe and document the incredible plants, animals, and fungi that call this area home. (NOTE: BRING YOUR BINOCULARS, AS THERE WILL BE SOME BIRDWATCHING, TOO!)

Whether you’re brand new to iNaturalist or a seasoned user, this event is for you. Your guide will teach you how to use the app effectively and share knowledge about the local wildlife we’re likely to encounter. All ages welcome! This is a family-friendly event and a great way to get kids curious about nature and science. Meet at the recreation area parking lot in front of the Visitor Center. There is a day use fee of $10 (or USE your National Parks/America the Beautiful pass). A restroom is available at the Visitor Center.
