On October 23, 2019 a Criminal Enforcement Operation was conducted in Corson County which involved officers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Department as well as the North Central South Dakota Multi-Jurisdictional Criminal Enforcement Team (MJCET).
The MJCET, which is made up of officers from the Sheriff’s Office in Corson, Walworth, Dewey, Ziebach, Campbell, and McPherson counties, as well as the Mobridge PD and Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, travels from county-to-county conducting operations focused on highway safety, reduction of preventable traffic crash fatalities, and disruption and deterrence of drug and criminal activity. The MJCET was formed as a way for agencies with limited resources to utilize the resources of the entire region to combat issues that affect our regional as a whole.
Participating in the operation on behalf of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Department were Chief of Police Sparky Edwards and Federal Police Officers Wayland Bad Hand and Brett Fischer.
During the operation a total of 56 traffic stops and 4 consensual encounters were conducted which resulted in the following:

*The felony violation referenced above was for Commission of a Felony While Armed with a Firearm.
During this operation, a traffic stop was conducted with a Washington plated vehicle on U.S. Highway 12 near milepost 126 (west of McIntosh, South Dakota). During the stop, officers observed factors consistent with criminal activity and K-9 Taz was deployed. A search, following a positive K-9 alert and indication, was conducted which revealed approximately 3.5lbs of ma*****na, nearly a half-ounce of butane hash oil, drug paraphernalia and two loaded handguns. The driver was subsequently arrested and lodged at the Walworth County Jail in Selby, South Dakota.
Since the inception of the MJCET in 2018, and throughout various operations in each jurisdiction, there have been 141 traffic stops and 5 consensual contacts conducted which resulted in the following:
