Nearly 60 million Americans live in rural communities, where access to healthcare is often limited by long travel distances, provider shortages, and hospital closures.
According to a recent Reuters report, more than 40% of rural hospitals in the U.S. are operating at a loss, and more than 100 rural hospitals have closed since 2005.
Rural residents are also more likely to be older, uninsured, and living with chronic health conditions.
For many communities, healthcare access depends on a fragile network of hospitals, EMS providers, and local clinics working with limited resources.
When a rural hospital closes, the impact reaches far beyond healthcare, affecting local economies, emergency response times, and overall quality of life.
Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) help meet healthcare needs in rural and medically underserved communities by preparing healthcare professionals to live and work where they are needed most.
Through rural clinical training experiences, student pathway programs, workforce recruitment efforts, and continuing education opportunities, AHECs help strengthen the healthcare workforce pipeline and expand access to care in communities that often face persistent provider shortages.
