In order to honor the life and legacy of John Wesley Holt, the Holt family established the John Wesley Holt Foundation in 2023. Through the foundation, two annual scholarships are awarded. Luke’s Senior that most exemplifies John Wesley’s character and the other is awarded to a sophomore Electrical Engineering student at USA. In addition to these scholarships, the foundation is also committed to o
ther philanthropic work in memory of John Wesley. John Wesley Holt was tragically killed in a hit and run accident on February 21, 2023. Luke’s Episcopal School, John Wesley was not only an avid soccer player and runner for the St. Luke’s varsity soccer and cross-country teams, but also an outstanding scholar and an active member of SGA. He held the title of class president for 5 consecutive years starting from 8th grade and was awarded various accolades during his time as a Wildcat, including the Good Citizenship Award. John Wesley was also an All-American soccer player. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his senior year at St. Luke’s before beginning the next chapter of his academic life at the University of South Alabama. John Wesley was an active member on South’s campus and held positions within the coveted First Year Council as well as the Sigma Chi Fraternity. At the time of his passing, he was a sophomore Electrical Engineering student. More important than his accomplishments, John Wesley’s loyalty and passion are what is most remembered by his friends and family. He was generous in both his time and talents and never passed on the opportunity to help a friend in need. His dedication to those he loved is the hallmark of his character. He held many titles in the lives of those who loved him, from advisor and confidant to mischief-maker and jokester. In his short life, he made his purpose known, to help others whether that was building someone up, making them laugh, or in his final act of organ donation, saving their life. It is this great presence that the foundation tries to emulate through the giving of these scholarships.
