Local beer with locally grown hops!?
Check out a special release this weekend from Braided River Brewing Co., a wonderful new partner of the MUG network!

On Friday, Aug. 7, we are releasing Harvest Ale, our unique pale ale brewed with local hops!

Our friend Kyle Owsley (left) of Auburn University's Ornamental Horticulture Research Center grew these Cascade hops for us as part of an experimental project just down the street from our brewery.

Braided River owner David Nelson (right) describes the hops' flavor as citrusy, almost satsuma-like.

To incorporate them in our Harvest Ale, we packed them into mesh nylon bags and tied them inside the tanks. They were used in multiple stages of the brewing process, first on the “hot” side, in the whirlpool, where they added bitterness to the brew. Then again in the fermentation tank, where they gave off their aroma.

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census returns to Alabama Aug. 21 and 22. This two-day event gives anyone the opportunity to become a citizen scientist and observe, count and celebrate pollinators. This is an enriching activity that people can do in just 15 minutes, either alone or with others.

Bethany O’Rear, an Alabama Extension home horticulture agent at Auburn University, said by being involved, everyone can learn a lot and enjoy the little things in nature.

“Participants will get as much from the census as the researchers do, if not more,” O’Rear said. “This is especially true if this is someone’s first time participating.”
