This week in the circle… 🎧🐑

What happens when a man spends decades following his own carefully laid plans—only to finally ask, “God, what is Your agenda?”

In this edition of Not Many Mighty, Stan sits down with his longtime friend and neighbor, Pastor George Riek of Orchard Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. ⛪️

George shares how God used a faithful Christian family to lead him to salvation at ten years old, guided him through a 22-year military career, and eventually called him into vocational ministry at nearly 39. It is a candid, encouraging story of delayed obedience, persistent grace, and a calling that George’s mother and wife recognized long before he did.

George also reflects on his journey from youth ministry to fifteen years of pastoring Orchard, the joys and unexpected difficulties of shepherding a local church, and the unique opportunities found in bivocational ministry. Along the way, he offers honest, deeply practical counsel for anyone discerning a call to ministry: 🙏 make certain it is God who is calling, remember that pastoring involves far more than preaching, and remain willing to serve where He places you.

For young men considering ministry—and for faithful pastors who need to be reminded that God can use every season of their story—George’s testimony is a powerful picture of what can happen when we surrender our plans and step onto God’s agenda.

Some nights are about gathering a crowd. But this night is about gathering around Jesus.

On Saturday September 26, pastors, ministry leaders, volunteers, families, and churches from across Alabama and Mississippi will come together at Northside Bible Church for a special 6:14 Ministries Night of Worship.

No spotlight. No competition. No church taking center stage.

Just the people of God lifting one voice to the One who has carried us, called us, and remained faithful and true through every season. 🙌

We believe there's something powerful about stepping beyond the walls of our individual churches and remembering that we belong to something much bigger. Different communities. Different congregations. Different stories—but one family, one Gospel, and one King.

If your heart is tired, come be refreshed. If your faith needs strengthening, come be reminded. If God has been good to you, come help us fill the room with praise.

🗓️ Saturday, September 26

Bring your family. Invite your pastor, your ministry team, and your church family. Then share this post with someone who needs an evening in the presence of God.

For one night, let's lay everything aside, lift our attention to Jesus, and worship the God who is still restoring hearts, renewing leaders, and rebuilding and revitalizing churches.

One family. One night. One unforgettable night of worship.

We can't wait to worship with you! 🎶

For nearly forty years, George Riek had a plan.

At seventeen, he joined the military. He built a 22-year career serving his country. 🇺🇸 As retirement approached, he had already decided what would come next: he would be a schoolteacher.

There was only one question he had never seriously asked: "God, what is Your agenda?"

Then, one particular Sunday night, an interim pastor stood in the pulpit and preached a message built around that very question... and suddenly, every plan George had made for himself was interrupted. At 39 years old, he realized God was calling him into ministry.

He was hesitant. He was afraid of the responsibility. He worried he might not be capable of the work. He prayed for God to give him an unmistakable sign 🙏... and then he discovered that his wife and his mother had both recognized the calling years before he ever did.

And when George finally told God that he would go wherever He sent him and do whatever He asked, he made only one request: “I’ll do anything—but I don’t want to be a youth minister.”

You can probably guess what happened next. 😆

This Friday on a brand new edition of Not Many Mighty, Stan sits down with his longtime friend, next door neighbor, and Orchard Baptist Church Lead Pastor, George Riek.

George shares his journey from coming to Christ at ten years old, through more than two decades in the military, into youth ministry, bivocational service, and ultimately 15 years of shepherding the people of Orchard. ⛪️ He also speaks candidly about the joys, surprises, criticisms, conflict, responsibility, and deeply personal work that comes with caring for a local church.

This is an episode for anyone who has ever wondered:

📖 Have I waited too long to answer God's call?
📖 What if I don't feel qualified?
📖 How can I know whether God is truly calling me into ministry?
📖 Does serving God mean leaving my existing career behind?
📖 What does pastoring look like beyond the Sunday sermon?

George's story reminds us that God wastes no season, overlooks no act of surrender, and is never limited by the timetable we thought our lives would follow.

If God is calling, it is not too late to answer.

🎧 A brand-new Not Many Mighty episode of The Shepherds Circle drops this Friday. Be sure to listen.... and share it with a young man, ministry student, lay leader, bivocational pastor, or anyone else who may be wrestling with God’s call.
