Gulf of America Alliance

Gulf of America Alliance The official account for the Gulf of America Alliance
🌊 building partnerships for a healthier gulf

Led by the five Gulf states, our network includes over 150 participating organizations from state and federal agencies, tribal governments, communities, academia, non-governmental organizations, and industry. Our actions support commitments to strengthening community resilience, increasing regional data sharing, serving coastal communities, and improving management of coastal habitats and wildlife

species. Priority issues addressed by the Alliance include coastal community resilience; data and monitoring; education; habitat; water resources; wildlife and fisheries; and marine debris.

WATCH: Andrew Ferris, Restoration Programs Manager for the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, describes efforts to restore two acres of marsh in Cameron Parish as part of their Native Plants Program. Over two days last week, volunteers planted 10,000 plugs of smooth cordgrass, a native species of marsh grass. The Alliance thanks CRCL, Gulf Star Partner Sempra Infrastructure, and additional volunteers from Royal Engineering and the Cameron Parish School Board.

Meet Our Team! This monthly feature introduces our staff and the work we do. This month: Becky Ginn. Becky is our Development Director, and in her role, she has built a fundraising strategy that expands the Alliance's private funding base and complements the organization's business plan. She secures the funds that helps make it possible for the Alliance to implement its goals and builds relationships across the Gulf that enhance the Alliance. Becky brings decades of experience that includes double-digit revenue growth while promoting corporate social responsibility. She feels proud to be a part of an organization that brings so many voices to the table in an effort to protect our Gulf and all who live within it. Becky graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts Theatre and Speech Communication, and from Auburn-Montgomery with a Master's in Business Administration. She lives in Gulfport, Miss.

This weekend, we’re working with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) to restore two acres of marsh in Cameron Parish as part of their Native Plants Program. Volunteers are planting 10,000 plugs of smooth cordgrass, a native species of marsh grass.

CRCL’s Native Plants Program gives community members the opportunity to participate in hands-on coastal restoration work while learning how coastal ecosystems protect and provide for us.

Volunteers previously planted two acres of marsh in the same area last month. This project is supported by the Alliance’s Gulf Star Program with funding from Sempra Infrastructure.

The Water Resources Team recently completed a project with the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) that improved plastic pollution monitoring in the area while engaging local community members.

Over time, the project expanded in scope to include marine debris monitoring surveys and land-based dolphin observations, in addition to water quality monitoring, citizen scientist research, and community engagement. Through these efforts and collaboration with local partners, GBF is working towards a better understanding of marine debris in the Galveston Bay area and a cleaner environment for all.

This project was supported by the Alliance Gulf Star Program with funding support from Hess.

This week, Alliance Executive Director Laura Bowie was in Washington D.C. for Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2026 ( ). “CHOW was excellent this year,” she said. “Keynote speakers provided overviews, priorities, and accomplishments from their agencies and panelists gave us glimpses of how it’s going on the ground.” Highlights included:
* The opening keynote from Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator, Dr. Neil Jacobs, who emphasized his vision for the agency and opportunities for innovation
* A working waterfront panel that included Gulf perspectives from our partner Ashley Bennis
* NOAA’s Great American Fish Festival

Congratulations to National Marine Sanctuary Foundation on 25 years of CHOW and your work bringing together leaders in ocean and coastal stewardship.

Gulf scientists, managers, and decision-makers rely on baseline seagrass data and estimates of change in coverage over time to respond after disturbance events, plan restoration projects, and identify future research and monitoring needs. To support these needs, our Habitat Resources Team recently completed a workplan to assess Gulf seagrass status and trends.

The project team, in collaboration with the Gulf Seagrass Community of Practice, incorporated input from experts, resource managers, and stakeholders to develop a workplan for a 2030 Seagrass Status and Trends Report. They also produced a gap analysis that identifies missing spatial, temporal, and classification information needed to detect seagrass change over time. The 2030 Seagrass Status and Trends Report will be the third in a series for the Gulf region; the previous reports covered the periods from 1940-2000 and 2002-2017.

This project was supported through the Gulf Star Program with funding from Shell.

The Gulf Partnership for Land Conservation and the Strategic Conservation Assessment Team recently completed a project to enhance and expand the Strategic Conservation Vision tool. This free, GIS-based tool uses 26 data sets to help conservation managers prioritize land acquisitions and protect Gulf Coast water quality, wildlife corridors, and habitats. The improvements from the project position the tool as a long-term, scalable resource for identifying high-value conservation opportunities, supporting transparent funding decisions, and maximizing ecological return on investment, with a renewed focus on future landscape protection for permanent land conservation.

This project was funded by the Alliance through a grant from the NOAA Office for Coastal Management.

The Integrated Planning Cross-Team Initiative recently completed work with The Water Institute to develop a new workflow that reconstructs historic marsh elevations across the Gulf of America using satellite imagery, vegetation data, and water-level records. The approach was used to produce “synthetic” digital elevation models (DEMs) at three sites (Grand Bay, MS; Apalachicola, FL; and Breton Sound, LA) to cover periods when no survey data are available. Results varied across sites, based on each location’s complexity, but were generally in the same range as typical LiDAR surveys. An extensive code base was also developed for the project, allowing for future extension to other coastal wetland locations.

This project was funded by the Alliance through a grant from the NOAA Office for Coastal Management.
