Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP)

Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) Partners for Environmental Progress believes in the balance between business growth and vigorous stewardship of our unique Gulf Coast natural resources.

PEP is an active member of the local environmental community, working with the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program and Envision Coastal Alabama, among others. We support local environmental educational endeavors, including the Coastal Kids Quiz and the CATE Foundation. Our most recent project, By-Product Synergy Central Gulf Coast, is an industrial waste minimization network designed to transform

one company’s by-product into an industrial input for another company. Synergies formed between participants turn costly waste streams into productive revenue streams while reducing the environmental impact of product or process. PEP is the recipient of EPA’s 2011 Gulf Guardian Award in recognition of the BPS project. PEP offers its members valuable business to business networking opportunities throughout the year:

• PEP Membership Breakfasts - features a local speaker chosen to educate our members on an important, current environmental issue.
• Golf Tournament – 60 teams, corporate representatives, contests, food and prizes.
• Reverse Trade Show – manufacturers are the exhibitors and vendors and suppliers are the attendees. The PEP Reverse Trade Show is an efficient and productive way to call on multiple companies in one day. PEP Members receive a significant discount on tickets!
• Annual Meeting – a special program, environmental stewardship awards and dinner for our members.

At our May membership breakfast, sponsored by Michelli Weighing & Measurement, members heard from Matt Beasley, Chief Commercial Officer, and John Rathburn, Senior Environmental Scientist, of Silicon Ranch — one of the largest and fastest-growing independent solar power producers in the country. The Nashville-based company, which owns rather than leases its land across 18 states, presented its Regenerative Energy® framework, making a compelling case that responsible solar development and thriving rural communities are not competing priorities — they're deeply complementary ones.

From agrivoltaics and regenerative cattle grazing to industry-leading recycling and a robust commitment to American-made equipment, Silicon Ranch is redefining what it means to be an energy company. Their work has direct ties to our region, including the recruitment of First Solar to Baldwin County — a $1.2 billion Alabama facility employing more than 800 Alabamians.

PEP hosted a valuable March Lunch & Learn and onsite tour at the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of Baldwin County, AL, giving members an inside look at how the facility supports businesses with recycling and material recovery solutions.

During the session, attendees received an overview of the Southwest Alabama Recycling Transformation: Year One Review, which shared insights into what happens to the materials the facility sells and how those materials are diverted from the landfill and re-enter the supply chain.

The group also learned how the facility helps companies manage materials such as cardboard, metals, electronics, paint, batteries, mixed paper, and hard-to-recycle plastics ( #1, 2, 5, and 7). The discussion highlighted how these services can help manufacturers, contractors, and service companies lower disposal costs, strengthen sustainability and ESG reporting, and find local solutions for difficult waste streams.

Following lunch and the presentation, members toured the facility and had the opportunity to see the machines and sorting processes in action, providing a firsthand look at how materials are processed, recovered, and prepared for resale or recycling.

Thank you to the Baldwin County Solid Waste Disposal Authority for hosting this event, and to our sponsor, SCS Engineers, for making this possible!

🎉 PEP recently celebrated another exciting milestone in our ongoing coastal restoration efforts with the installation of additional Eagle Reefs across Baldwin and Mobile counties. New reefs were placed at the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources boat ramps on Dauphin Island, along with several homeowner installations and multiple reef deployments at two locations in Foley - the Graham Creek Nature Preserve board walk and the Wolf Creek Park fishing dock.

🐟🦪 What makes these projects especially rewarding is seeing the transformation already taking place. Side-by-side with newly installed reefs, older Eagle Reefs are thriving — covered in oysters and attracting fish and marine life, proving the long-term impact these living shorelines can have on our coastal ecosystem. These installations continue to strengthen habitats, improve water quality, and enhance fishing in public access areas for generations to come!
