CHURCH PROPERTY EXPANSION ADVANCES
⛪ Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church moved closer to expanding its property at 50 South Ann Street Thursday when the Mobile Planning Commission approved two related subdivisions and recommended changes to the church's existing development approvals.

🏘️ The project involves adjoining properties at 59 and 61 Bradford Avenue and 1311 Azalea Street.

Three smaller parcels from the rear of those properties would be incorporated into the church's property, creating an approximately 3.58-acre campus, while three separate residential lots would remain.

Two existing rental dwelling units must be demolished, with the necessary permits obtained, before the subdivision plat can be finalized.

During the hearing, the applicant's representative explained that a church member is involved in acquiring adjoining property and donating portions to the church.

Gregory Saad of Saad Development Corp. is listed as the applicants' representative.

The church previously received expansion approval in 2007, including a proposed large pavilion that apparently was never constructed.

The representative said no immediate construction is planned. Instead, the church intends to consider a comprehensive development plan for the enlarged property in the future.

The Planning Commission approved both subdivisions and recommended approval of modifications to the church's existing Planning Approval and Planned Unit Development.

The modifications require final Mobile City Council approval. Any future development must also comply with the requirements of the Old Dauphin Way Historic District.

🏛️ Old Dauphin Way History: The William Minge House located at 350 Lafayette Street. This was definitely a loss to the neighborhood. What a lovely home!

William Henry Harrison Minge was born on October 26, 1830, in Charles City, Virginia. The son of Collier Harrison Minge Sr. and Anna Maria Ladd, William later made his home in Alabama. He and his wife, Mary Jane Gladden, had at least seven children—three sons and four daughters.

Minge purchased the property in 1863, and the house stood for several decades before being demolished in 1904. Although the house is gone, historic photographs help preserve the memory of Mobile's changing architectural landscape and the people who helped shape it.

Every historic home has a story to tell—even those that no longer stand. By preserving these images and sharing their stories, we keep a piece of Mobile and Old Dauphin Way's history alive.

This interesting structure was the William Minge House, located at 300 (later) 350 Lafayette St. in Mobile. Purchased by the family in 1863, it was torn down in the early 1900s.

The image was donated to the Doy Leale McCall Rare Book and Manuscript Library, University of South Alabama by Ruth Lyon Russ.

Who’s ready for a little Halloween magic in the neighborhood?! 🕷️🦇

We're putting together the Old Dauphin Way Halloween Trail of Decorated Homes, and we'd love to have YOU be part of the fun!

Imagine our historic neighborhood filled with glowing jack-o'-lanterns, spooky porches, creepy creatures, and creative Halloween displays for everyone to enjoy! 🏚️🎃🖤

Here's how you can participate:

🍬 Welcome trick-or-treaters and hand out candy!
👻 Or simply let us know you'd like your decorated home included for neighbors to admire.

We're working on map highlighting participating homes and identifying those welcoming trick-or-treaters, so families can plan their Halloween adventure through Old Dauphin Way.

UPDATE: Monterey Place Column Is Getting Repaired!

Good news for our neighborhood! The City is repairing the historic column at Monterey Place, helping preserve one of the distinctive features that contribute to the character and charm of Old Dauphin Way.

We’re grateful to see progress getting made!
