McKemie Place

McKemie Place is a place where needs are met, hope is given, and lives are changed. We're the region's only emergency shelter for unaccompanied homeless women.

Founded in 2007, McKemie Place is the only overnight shelter for single, homeless women in Mobile, Washington and Baldwin counties in Alabama. Our first guests were given shelter in March of that year as a service under the United Methodist Inner City Mission, thanks to the efforts of the late Jamie Praytor. McKemie Place is a safe haven for homeless unaccompanied women. We have a 48 bed capacity

to provide a place for women to stay. In fact, our beds have been filled over 15,000 times since the very first night we opened our doors. Through the gracious assistance of volunteers, who bring a warm, prepared meal, we also serve dinner to our guests each evening. While some of our ladies are struggling, some have jobs and go to work each day. But all find comfort, friendship and spiritual support as they seek to rebound from the challenges life has thrown their way. McKemie Place operates under the guidance of a Board of Directors, with Japonicas “JP” Thurman and Allison Crane serving as Co-Executive Directors. We rely heavily upon community support to operate the shelter. Your donations are needed now more than ever! Please consider making a donation of your time, goods or financial resources. We’re just 12 days away from the Sip & Serve - Street Tennis Tournament at Braided River Brewing Co., and there’s still time to register your team! 🎾

Never played mini tennis before? It’s tennis, but smaller and a lot more fun. Courts are set up right on the streets of Downtown Mobile, we use foam balls and youth-sized racquets, and all equipment is provided. No experience is needed, just bring your energy and your team spirit.

Teams can have up to 4 players, and matches are played as doubles (two players on court at a time). It will be a great evening of friendly competition, local brews, and community fun, all benefiting McKemie Place, the only emergency shelter for unaccompanied women in Southwest Alabama.

On Nov. 14, LODA Artwalk night, we're bringing back mini street tennis, in a tournament to benefit McKemie Place!

We'll have the nets, rackets, balls and beers. You just need to bring comfy shoes and friendly competition. No tennis experience necessary.
