A group of concerned and dedicated individuals, who have been working in Historic Oaklawn Cemetery for the past

three years has stepped up to organize a nonprofit, “Veterans Memorial Recovery Team” (VMRT). Our mission:
To promote public interest in the military service of Veterans to the United States during peacetime, time of war, or armed conflict. To show respect to our military Veterans by identifying, documenting, and preserving the memory of those heroes from all branches of service who sacrificed in trying times and became heroes and legends. To understand and appreciate the contributions Veterans made and those that they continue to make on behalf of their community and country. Veterans Memorial Recovery Team is at Historic Oaklawn Cemetery for the sole purpose of locating, documenting, and placing an American Flag by each Soldier interred in Oaklawn. We will locate and place small American flags by each Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Coast Guardsman, Airman and Merchant Marine buried there since 1931. Our goal is to clean the veterans grave sites in this cemetery located at 1800 Holt Rd., Mobile, AL 36617. This project is far bigger than our team can manage, we welcome any volunteers help. To help in our efforts to locate our Veterans or if you wish to adopt a veterans grave site to maintain it, all the time, contact:
Bill Atkeison – 251-599-5358, Fran Barber – 251-605-1290 or Jim Ellis – 251-404-8601 or leave a message on this group site. (April 23, 2020)
The Facebook Group was created solely for the purpose of making the public aware of the deplorable conditions of the grave sites of our Veteran Heroes interred in this cemetery. We are in the process of locating, identifying and cleaning the headstones and grave sites of these WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf War veterans. We estimate there are over 2000 Veterans interred at this cemetery. If you have a family member, or friend interred here you are encouraged to join us in this project. If you are unable, or live too far away, you can help by sharing this group with your friends. There are Buffalo Soldiers, Tuskegee Airmen, Warriors from all branches of the military buried here.
