From Rep Adline Clarke:

Dear Friends:

During the 2022 regular session of the Alabama Legislature, I introduced a resolution that created the Alabama Workforce and Wage Gap Task Force. The task at hand is to identify policies that policymakers can use to close gender and racial pay gaps. Although Alabama now has an equal pay law, there's still work to be done to close pay gaps.

Melanie Bridgeforth, president and CEO of the Women's Foundation of Alabama, is task force chair.

The first meeting of the task force will be held virtually on Tuesday, August 16, at 10 a.m. If you would like to attend the one-hour Zoom meeting, please register in advance at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KVEZ-oZhQbSKL-09nSIu0w.

Please share the link with other interested persons.

Update: Gayfer's project.

BREAKING:
A PLAN TO CONVERT THE VACANT GAYFERS BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN MOBILE TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING HAS BEEN UNANIMOUSLY REJECTED BY MOBILE CITY COUNCIL.
The city would have committed 8 million dollars of American Rescue Plan funding to the mutlti-million dollar project. Council members felt the project was too expensive and the money could be better utilized providing affordable housing in other parts of the city. https://mynbc15.com/news/local/affordable-housing-plan-for-gayfers-building-in-doubt

It looks like the use of the Gayfers building for affordable housing is back on the table. What's changed in how this is being addressed now? See our earlier messages from August 2021.

Nonprofit housing development firm wants to turn the old Gayfers building on Dauphin into 94 low-income housing units. The City of Mobile would be paying a share of the cost.
