We are proud to recognize the dedicated volunteers who were awarded a Community Service Award at today’s meeting for their outstanding work at the historic Old Mobile / 27 Mile Bluff site. 🇺🇸
This important site marks the location of Fort Louis de la Louisiane (1702–1711)—the first capital of French Louisiana and the birthplace of what would become the City of Mobile. Rich in early colonial history, Old Mobile represents a vital chapter in the story of the Gulf Coast and our nation’s beginnings.
Members of the Tristan de Luna Chapter, NSDAR, were honored to be part of this meaningful effort alongside others who are passionate about preserving our shared history. Volunteers worked to clear debris from excavation areas, clean and restore historic monuments, install new historical signage, and improve the overall appearance and accessibility of the grounds. During the cleanup, artifacts such as a jug handle and historic brick were even discovered—powerful reminders of the lives once lived there over 300 years ago.
We also extend special appreciation to the Friends of Old Mobile, the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the site of the original settlement of Mobile, founded in 1702 at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff along the Mobile River. Their ongoing stewardship ensures this important historic site is protected and shared with future generations.
This was truly a labor of love—carried out by individuals committed to honoring the past and preserving it for the future.
We are incredibly proud of all who contributed their time, energy, and dedication to this project. Your efforts make a lasting impact in our community and help ensure that the story of Old Mobile continues to be told. 💙
