On this day in 1864, the Battle of Trevilian Station began, concluding the following day. The two-day battle, which was a part of Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, was one of the largest all-cavalry battles of the war. Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan failed to achieve his goal of destroying the Virginia Central Railroad or of linking up with Maj. Gen. David Hunter.
