Moberly Junior College Greyhounds: National Champs 1954, 1955, 1966, 1967 This page exists to perpetuate the memories of Moberly Junior College's Greyhound basketball and its national championships in 1954, 1955, 1966 and 1967.

Although head coaches Maurice John and Cotton Fitzsimmons died long ago, the memories of the Greyhounds of 1954, 1955, 1966 and 1967 are still alive for the dozens of players, hundreds of classmates and thousands of fans who experienced the magic of traveling from a small town in rural north-central Missouri to Hutchinson, Kansas. The Greyhounds of 1954, 1955, 1966 and 1967, recruited from the far

corners of Missouri and the United States, achieved national prominence for their brand, for Moberly Junior College and the Moberly community writ large by winning the national championship at Hutchinson's Salt Palace Arena on four separate occasions. Through Facebook's unique presence in the social media world, this Moberly Junior College Greyhound page hopes to connect the former players with each other, their classmates, teachers and the fans who followed their four winning seasons. If you're a Greyhound, or a lover of Greyhound basketball, check this page regularly, share your memories and post your pictures and stories. Here's to the Red and Grey forever.

Too good not to share. The 1971-1972 Milwaukee Bucks trading card for former all- time Moberly Greyhound star McCoy McLemore (April 3, 1942-April 30, 2009). Mac played with Lew Alcindor/Kareem Abdul-Jabar on that NBA championship team.

The Jack Yates High School Houston, MJC and Drake University great played for the Warriors, Bulls, Suns, Pistons, Cavaliers, Bucks and his hometown Rockets between 1964-1972, averaging about 9 PPG and 6 RPG.

Described as a “man of God” in his later life, he was a distinguished television commentator and high school coach after retiring from the NBA.

At his funeral, one of his Furr High School players said of Mac, “He told us, ‘when you walk across this line, I expect 110%.’ Little did we know he was teaching us life lessons.”

With their bench outscoring the opposition 51-23, the Greyhounds vanquished the Three Rivers Raiders from Poplar Bluff at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena Friday night, January 12.

It was a laugher, a 100-70 romp for the Hounds.

The game was without resemblance to the embarrassing season-ending loss to the charges of legendary juco coach Gene Bess in the regional championship spat last March at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Friday night, coming off losses at Indian Hills in Ottumwa and St. Louis Community College over the preceding seven days, the Hounds led 40-29 at halftime and never felt Raider pressure after intermission.

Moberly clicked on 45% of its field goals, 29% from three-point range and 69% at the free throw line. Three Rivers was good with 35% of its field offerings, 11% on threes and 59% at the stripe. MACC won the rebound fight 48-37.

The game featured four ties and five lead changes.Three Rivers was flagged for two technical fouls, got eight points off turnovers and had 11 second chance points. Meanwhile, the Hounds escaped any technicals, scored 11 points off turnovers and bagged 22 points on second chances.

Tyree White led the locals with 17 points, Dallas Morgan had 16, and D'Travion Edwards, Tyree Alston and Billy Thomas all finished with 11 counters. Moberly Spartan alums Will Rucker and Rhokist Omadu had six and three points, respectively, and Rucker also snared five boards.

Unusually, Coach Bess's 6-9 Raiders seemed absent any low post bangers and no gunners who found the bottom of the net at Fitzsimmons-John Friday.

Moberly visits State Fair at Sedalia Wednesday and returns to home boards to host Mineral Area January 20 for a bout which will feature a reunion of men who've worn Moberly uniforms the past 23 years. The Hounds and Raiders will meet again January 27 at Poplar Bluff.

A photo out of our past: the Pride of McCooey High School in Hannibal, Pat Murphy. Shared today by his son David, I think, from Fulton, Illinois. Pat is celebrating his 73rd birthday today. Just a young Hound. No dunks for Pat today, but maybe a few hook shots or two-handed set shots made famous by Cotton, the whiz kid from Eolia and Bowling Green High School.

A month into the season, the Greyhounds are undefeated, 16-men strong and ready for a couple of Thanksgiving feasts before hosting a weekend classic against formidable foes from Illinois and Iowa. Highland is on the schedule Friday night and arch rival Indian Hills furnishes the competition Saturday.

The Hounds blitzed the Scouts from Penn Valley in Kansas City Tuesday night, 103-67. Big score, lots of fast wheels on the hardwood, dunks and more dunks, fouls and flubs aplenty. Not sure if I saw any plays, however. MACC was led by Alonzo Verge, a 6-3 guard from Chicago, with 18; JJ Matthews, a 6-8 forward from Richmond, Va., with 17; and Randy Miller, a 6-3 guard from Odenton, Md.

MACC has two Hounds who list Moberly as their hometown, both graduates of Moberly High School: 6-7, 220-pound redshirt freshman Will Rucker and 6-3 Rohkist Omadu. Rucker is from the Class of 2016 and Omadu, who played 2016-2017 for the Spartans, is from Benin, in western Africa. A popular student-athlete at MHS last winter, Omadu has become the crowd favorite.

Not sure this year's club has 27 wins in it, like last season's Hounds. That written, the depth of talent would tease the fans to believe they'll be trophies in their future come March.

Wednesday night, the Hounds will dine as a team at Nelly's and on Thanksgiving they'll be pampered by the good folks at Zion Lutheran Church. As always, Hounds don't go hungry.

This story has nothing to do with Greyhounds or even junior college basketball. But it's all about an American kid who went to the other side of the world to pursue his hoop dreams. I admire him for that. Moberly's had its share of cagers breeze through town for a year en route someplace higher up the basketball food chain. And we were happy to have them in Red and Grey while they were here.

DeMario Mayfield moved to Baghdad seeking redemption two years ago after his hoop dreams were left in tatters by a run-in with the law.

The MACC Greyhounds recognized the Moberly High School Spartan football team during halftime of their win over John Wood College of Quincy Tuesday night at Fitzsimmons-John Arena.

The Spartans are 10-2, winners of 10 straight and conference and district champions entering a state quarterfinal game Friday night at home vs. Platte County.

The good will gesture included the Hounds hosting the Westran High School football team from Huntsville, which also is headed to a quarterfinal game this weekend.

The Spartans are pictured here in their red game jerseys courtside during the halftime introductions.
