Southern Indiana Adult Guardianship Services

Southern Indiana Adult Guardianship Services We operate as part of the Volunteer Advocates for Senior Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) program.

SIAGS is a Volunteer Advocates for Senior Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) program providing guardianship, advocacy, and support for vulnerable adults across Southern Indiana. Our agency serves as the court-appointed guardian for adults with intellectual disabilities, dementia, and other cognitive impairments who are unable to make everyday medical and financial decisions. Southern Indiana Adult Guard

ianship Services (SIAGS) provides advocacy and guardianship for at-risk and incapacitated adults residing in Lawrence, Orange, Washington, Crawford, Dubois, Monroe, and Owen Counties in Indiana. Our goal is to deliver services in the least restrictive way possible while honoring the dignity and value of every individual we serve. We are supported by a team of trained volunteers who serve as the “eyes and ears” of the court. These volunteers visit clients monthly and have access to free continuing education on topics relevant to guardianship and elder care. 📖 Wisdom Wednesday! 📖

"What exactly is Guardianship" you may ask!

Guardianship is a legal arrangement in which a court appoints a person (called a guardian) to make decisions for someone (called the protected person) who is unable to make certain decisions for themselves.

Guardianship commonly applies in two situations:

Children: If a child's parents are unable to care for them due to death, illness, or other circumstances, a guardian may be appointed to make decisions about the child's education, healthcare, and daily welfare.

Adults: An adult who has a serious disability, dementia, mental illness, or another condition that prevents them from making informed decisions may have a guardian appointed to manage their personal, medical, or financial affairs (depending on the type of guardianship).

There are different types of guardianship, including:

Guardianship of the person: The guardian makes decisions about the person's healthcare, living arrangements, and personal care.

Guardianship of the estate (or property): The guardian manages the person's finances and property.

Limited guardianship: The guardian has authority only over specific areas where the person needs assistance, allowing the person to retain as much independence as possible.

Because guardianship significantly affects a person's legal rights, courts usually require evidence that it is necessary and often consider less restrictive alternatives, such as powers of attorney or supported decision-making, before granting it.

What questions do YOU have?!

We are still on the search for a perfect volunteer for our beloved Veteran!

He served us, now let's serve him! 🇺🇸

Volunteer Opportunity – Owen County, Indiana

A local veteran and double amputee is looking for something simple, yet incredibly meaningful—human connection.

He currently resides at McCormick’s Creek Rehabilitation Center and would greatly benefit from someone willing to spend time with him, talk, listen, and just be present.

🕒 Even a small amount of your time can make a big difference.
💬 Share stories. Offer companionship. Show appreciation.

If you or someone you know might be interested in volunteering, please reach out.

Let’s come together and support someone who has given so much.

This month, we had a very special visitor spreading smiles across the nursing facilities and group homes we serve 🐾💛

Meet Dottie! 🐶 A Bernese Mountain Dog puppy in training to become a therapy dog with one of our incredible volunteer advocates. With her sweet tri-color “tuxedo” coat and gentle nature, she brought so much joy and comfort to the individuals we support.

Moments like these show the impact our volunteers make every day. 💛

If you’ve ever thought about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable adults, we’d love to have you join us. Visit siags.net to apply to become a volunteer advocate.
