Hunters Busted for Illegally Killing 17 Turkeys Across Two States

Three Louisiana hunters were busted after wildlife investigators say they illegally killed 12 wild turkeys in Nebraska and another five in their home state of Louisiana, for a total of 17 birds. The investigation began in Nebraska and eventually expanded across state lines, showing how conservation officers are working together to crack down on wildlife crimes.

According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Morgan Levi Jones, 29, of Ruston, Charles Ladon Gilbert, 56, of Quitman, and Zackary Turner Gilbert, 29, of Quitman were cited after the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission alerted Louisiana agents. Investigators allege each hunter harvested four gobblers in Nebraska despite the state’s two-bird seasonal limit, then transported the illegally taken birds back to Louisiana, resulting in additional wildlife violations.

The investigation also uncovered alleged Louisiana turkey hunting violations. Jones was cited for failing to tag harvested turkeys and exceeding both the daily and seasonal limits, while Zackary Gilbert was cited for failing to tag birds and exceeding the daily limit. Agents seized turkey beards, spurs, and fans from 16 birds as evidence. If convicted, the hunters could face fines, jail time, restitution, and additional penalties. It’s another reminder that wildlife violations don’t stop at the state line, and conservation officers across the country are sharing information to hold poachers accountable.
