If your family is looking for an opportunity to serve others on Thanksgiving Day and if you are available in the morning, check out this link. You can sign up easily. There are three spots around Houston where you can pick up meals to be delivered. Volunteering is easy. You just pick up food and drive around and deliver it to homeless people. It is easy. My friend has done it for years and has told me how priceless it is to see the joy on their faces as you hand them meals.

In 2016, Operation Turkey hand delivered more than 40,000 meals to the homeless and less fortunate in 13 official cities and 6 states. This year our goal is 50,000 meals with even more locations.

Who is Crew 140?

Crew 140 was founded in the spring of 2013. At that point, a few leaders and older scouts, were looking for something more. After many years of Boy Scouts it was obvious that older youth could easily become bored or feel left out as the emphasis was quite often on Trail to First Class. They were not being challenged.

Also. one issue that was becoming more and more a part of the discussion was the sisters of these same scouts. How to create a program to get the older youth (boys and girls) involved in activities with a focus on adventure, leadership and service. Venturing was exactly the right fit!

With only the minimum needed to start a Crew, we grew immediately hitting an untapped need in the Sienna Plantation area of Missouri City. In fact, due to the lack of active Crews in the larger area, we began to have new members from the greater Houston area. In large part this was due to the activity of the Crew and the fact that as we grew to up to 40+ youth we maintained a 50/50 ration of male to female. Many Crews that we knew of were quote small, less than 10 youth, and typically not very active or locked into a single activity. Crew 140 is open to all activities simply letting the youth lead the way.

With activities monthly, camp outs or service, we stay quite busy. The activities range from hard core backpacking trips to more relaxed car camping with a focus on s’mores! As Venturing Crews typically do, we also have an annual superevent each summer has ranged from Philmont treks, to the Summit, to trips to Switzerland and the Kandersteg International Scout Camp (KISC).
