There was another significant anniversary while we were in Namibia. Silver Lining, the amazing aid organization that Sue started, recently turned 4 years old. In that time Sue has distributed hundreds of aid packages to families that are in dire need.
What struck me on this trip, was how much the DRC (democratic resettlement community) has expanded, but also how much more extreme the poverty for thousands. In my 20+ years of traveling to Namibia, I've never seen the level of poverty so bad that people now routinely are dying from malnutrition or diseases or ailments that are vastly exasperated by the realities of living such a marginalize existence. It is truly heartbreaking
Sue is out there every day. Identifying the families most in need and doing what she can with the resources she has. Silver Lining exists purely on the donations. Sue herself does not get paid for this work. It's just what she does.
We accompanied Sue one day and visited the pre-school shown here. We also visited a few other families and dropped off some packages. The people are lovely. Kind, thoughtful, gracious and very thankful. They live in very small shacks that may have 7 or 8 or 9 people living there with no electricity or running water and dirt floors, but they still do what they can to keep the space tidy.
