Happy work-iversary to our asset manager, Erin Ojala! Erin has been part of the Homeword team for more than a decade, bringing an incredible depth of knowledge and thoughtfulness to her work.

We asked our team what Erin does that makes a big difference, and they had a lot to share! Erin has organized brain and knows so much about our organization. She’s thorough, intentional, great about following up and generous in sharing her knowledge.

Erin's leadership, level head and drive make a huge difference across the Project Team, and we’re grateful for the expertise and perspective she brings to Homeword. And just as importantly, Erin is always up for the fun stuff, too. We love Halloween crafting, river trips and shooting pool with her. In sum, she’s a rockstar!

We spent Indigenous Peoples’ Day learning, reflecting and connecting with our community.

Our team started the day with a river cleanup, honoring the Salish, Kootenai and Kalispell people, the original stewards of this unceded land. We then shared a meal together before meeting a few of our board members at the University of Montana’s Payne Family Native American Center for Native Stories and Stars in the planetarium.

Some of our team members also attended the powwow at Caras Park, sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

Happy work-iversary to our finance manager, Laurel! Around the Homeword office, Laurel is known for a LOT: her incredible knowledge and accuracy, wild organizational skills, dedication and being a go-to resource for just about every team. She’s always ready to tackle whatever comes her way and somehow manages to make us laugh while doing it.

She’s also known for being the first one in the office (often wrapped up in a blanket burrito), her love of tea and charcuterie, a sweater for every season, a very impressive cookbook collection and her rescue ferrets.

But most of all, Laurel is known for how much she cares! She cares about her work, her coworkers, her family and every animal she encounters. We’re so lucky to have her on the Homeword team!

This week, Homeword’s Operations and Program Director Julie and Financial Educator Chelsea headed to the Flathead Valley for a day of outreach and connection! They visited local agencies, the Kalispell Library and Whitefish Credit Union, and connected with Housing Whitefish and the Whitefish Housing Authority.

Along the way, they hung flyers and spread the word about Homeword’s online classes and counseling services, as well as our in-person classes in the Flathead Valley. This little adventure was a great opportunity to build community connections and help more Montanans access resources to support their home-related and financial goals!

On Monday, Homeword Financial Educator Chelsea taught a budgeting session at the Watershed Navigation Center as part of Ready to Rent. The session was part of the City of Missoula’s Landlord Engagement Pilot Program, led by Kristian Stripes, which helps connect people with resources and support as they work toward stable housing.

We’re glad to be part of this effort and to share practical tools that can help people feel more confident managing their finances.

Our fundraising manager, Jacq, recently attended the Montana Nonprofit Association's annual conference! Two big highlights for her were learning about the work of Berry Medicine Native Birthwork Initiatives and making seven one-on-one connections with consultants, grantmakers, Montana Department of Commerce staff and representatives from the offices of Senator Daines, Senator Sheehy and Congressman Downing. And, of course, she loved all the great conference swag!

Jacq is always grateful for opportunities to learn, connect and hear more about the incredible work happening across Montana’s nonprofit community!
