"In 2002, I posted on the ACA message board [Companions Wanted] looking for someone to ride the TransAmerica Trail with. Many emails later, I had a group. One of the guys joining was Scott, who had just been released from jail in Vietnam for illegal camping. That sounded a little shady. Little did I know we'd be married a few years later. Two other members from that group ended up married as well. Love must have been in the air that summer.

We never could shake the bike touring bug, always scheming and planning the next adventure. At some point we realized our jobs and city lives were getting in the way of our true passion. So we gave it all up. Easter 2013, we sold our house and everything we owned and left Houston for Tierra del Fuego. Not so much a tour as a new life. With everything we own on our bicycles, we're traveling via 'The Poor Man's R.V.' We don't know if, when, or where we'll settle down again."

Sarah and Scott's story and photo are part of Adventure Cycling's 40-plus-year storytelling project called The National Bicycle Touring Portrait Collection. This year, Adventure Cycling is digitizing the entire collection.

Companions Wanted is a member benefit for finding riding partners on long-distance bike tours. It’s not a dating service or a space for personal ads. Just cyclists looking for other cyclists to share the road. What happens after that is between you and the open road.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ 🚲In 1976, we formed Bikecentennial, a member nonprofit and coast-to-coast ride to celebrate America's 200th birthday. Four thousand cyclists showed up. Most had never ridden long distance before. By the end, they all said the same thing: "I learned more about this country in 90 days than most people learn in a lifetime."

The route they rode was the TransAmerica Trail, the first cross-country bike route in the U.S., Astoria, OR to Yorktown, VA. We've been mapping routes for that kind of travel ever since. And you don't have to ride all of it; the adventure starts wherever you're ready. Summer season is starting soon and lots of people will be out there riding it in the upcoming months!

Am I too old or out of shape for a bike tour?

This one's for the person who's been following bike touring accounts for years, saving routes, watching other people's trip recaps, and quietly wondering if they'd ever actually do it themselves. The answer is yes. Read the latest blog by Adventure Cycling tour leader Brielle Wacker and find out why you, yes you, are more ready than you think.
