Trees for Missoula

Trees for Missoula Trees need helping hands. That means we need to plant their replacements, today.Trees for Missoula is committed to ensuring that happens.

The big, beautiful trees that line Missoula’s streets, adorn our parks and shade our homes were planted some 80 years or more ago, and most have life spans of around 50 to 100 years. So our town remains green, cool, healthy and beautiful. To do that, we’re assisting the city of Missoula with an urban tree census, spreading education on proper pruning and care, and encouraging people to plant, plant and plant some more.

Last week, we helped Missoula Downtown plant five new trees in empty tree wells on Ryman & Broadway. It was a team effort to dig out old dirt and debris, plant properly sized trees, and fill in with new soil and top with mulch.

As much of downtown is a heat island, we're excited to have a few new trees to offer shade, beauty, and countless other climate and health benefits to the neighborhood. This is just the beginning -- stay tuned for more collaborative tree planting efforts downtown!

Lots of people made this planting possible! Thank you to Jack, Ray, and Spencer from Missoula Downtown & Karen Sippy for planning and executing the planting; Marie, Ben, & Robert from Missoula Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for their sage wisdom and guidance; Adam & team from Urban Forestry for hauling away the old dirt, and , Lohn & Robinson, PLLP for keeping the trees watered!

Last week, with help from volunteers and the Missoula Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry department, we planted seven trees in Missoula's Northside neighborhood!

These plantings are part of our tree equity initiative, funded by the Montana DNRC, to plant trees in neighborhoods with low tree canopy.

We planted bur oaks, red oaks, and linden trees, which will provide shade to this "heat island" - a hot spot in an urban area.

We're so grateful to Austin Amestoy with Montana Public Radio for covering our work on urban trees + climate resilience!

You can read his story about our tree planting day here: https://www.mtpr.org/montana-news/2026-05-18/missoula-nonprofit-plants-trees-to-grow-climate-resilience

The Ethnobotany Garden at UM is a special place and it could use a little help! Consider volunteering on Fridays in April and May.

Garden caretakers are hosting volunteer workdays on Fridays, April 24th and May 1st & 8th from 1:00 - 5:00. Duties will include weeding, cutting down last year's stalks, and clearing out leaves and garbage.

Located at the Payne Family Native American Center on the UM campus, the garden contains plants, shrubs, and grasses native to Montana's ecoregions and culturally significant to the Indigenous people who live here.

We had fun planting trees at Big Sky Horse Park/Missoula Horse Council last week! We planted Accolade elms and Silver lindens - both which are fairly fast growing and will provide some much needed shade to the area. Thanks to Natalie Sullivan for the opportunity to help with this project. We're excited for phase 2!

Springtime PSA - Water Your Trees!

Leafout has begun, which means it's time to start watering your trees! This time of year, trees are putting all of their stored resources into their leaves and flowers, and they need water to make this process happen. Help out your trees by ensuring they have enough water and their soil is moist. Let's help our trees reach their full, leafy potential!
