I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and have had intimate relations with air, water, rivers, lakes, oceans, visions and dreams. Velzora Laura Brown-Flanagan (Nana) was a doll doctor, who told fortunes with playing cards and kept a parakeet in the kitchen. She kept her fishing poles, fish bucket and tackleboxes on the cellar stairs where thousands of dolls-eyes dangled from her workbenches. Halfway down the stairs, a door opened to the side of the house. Nana tended a flower garden facing the railroad tracks and the Cedar river. Walking past the garden, over the tracks and down to the shore... Nana taught me to fish in waters below the dam. I was only five, the first time I asked her to take me to the water. (1956)

Includes two rare early performances captured live in 1961-1962 Nina Simone has always been hard to classify. The “High Priestess of Soul” was trained as a classical pianist, but branched out early into pop, gospel, jazz and blues, playing and singing everyone’s compositions and writing many of her own. At 28 years old, she had already been seen in many clubs and had recorded several LPs when in 1961-62 she agreed to be filmed, without audience, in a New York City studio. On the1961 date, Nina Simone, on piano and vocals is accompanied by Bobby Hamilton (percussion), Chris White (bass) and Al Schackman (guitar). This is the same group that had backed her at the Newport Jazz Festival the year before.

In 1962 she headed back to the studio and performs with Montego Joe (congas), Lisle Atkinson (bass), Paul Palmieri (guitar), and Warren Smith (percussion). At that time, she was playing with this group of musicians at the New York City jazz venue The Village Gate.

Selections include: Sunday in Savannah, I’ll Look Around, When I Was in My Prime, Zungo (a Nigerian chain gang song taught her by the great drummer Babatunde Olatunji), For All We Know, Strawberry Woman, Crab Man…, I Loves You, Porgy (from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess) and some jazz improvisation. These are two rare performances, captured live, that every Nina Simone fan will treasure.

The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. I followed them more than the St. Louis Cardinal football team. The Cardinals left St. Louis in 1988.
I only ever played football on a vacant lot, no helmet, with the neighborhood kids.

But I played Khoury League Baseball growing up in St. Louis. And I have a fond memory of Dad taking me to see the Cardinal Baseball Team play at the old wooden Bush Stadium in the sixties. The only sports I participated in during high school were track, swimming and riflery. Have never been much of a sports kinda guy, but my favorite professional sport remains baseball.

Learned to love football when I lived a few blocks from Anaheim Stadium. And appreciated it more when Uncle Bob, in Marshalltown, would enjoy a game of football on TV with me.

When living in Los Angeles I saw my first and only professional Hockey and Basketball games. They were both fun! The Lakers were amazing!

But I went to baseball games at stadiums in St. Louis, Anaheim, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. Since those times, I've retired to Missoula, Montana, where the only ball teams are at the University of Montana at Missoula.

I suppose I should check out a game sometime...

Hearing voices can be a symptom of some mental health problems, but not everyone that hears voices are unwell. This section looks at what it can be like to hear voices, why you might hear voices and how to cope with them.

Overview

Around 1 in 10 of us hear voices that other people don’t hear.
Another term for hearing voices is ‘auditory hallucinations’.
Voices can say positive or negative things.
Negative voices can be hard to cope with and upsetting.
Hearing voices is not always a sign of a mental health problem.
Treatments for hearing voices can include medication, talking therapies and peer support.

There are different types voices. Everyone’s experiences are different. Some things you may experience are:

voices talking to you,
voices talking about you,
hearing music,
hearing animal noises, or
hearing background noises, like people chatting, or the sound of a car going by.
What is it like to hear voices?
Hearing voices is a different experience for everyone. The voices might:

be familiar to you or ones you’ve never heard,
be male or female,
feel like they’re inside your head,
feel like they’re outside of you, as if someone is speaking over your shoulder,
speak different languages or have different accents to the ones you’re familiar with,
whisper or shout,
be children or adults,
be sounds, such as the sound of a car or of animals,
talk to you often. Or only say occasional words or phrases, and
talk at the same time as other voices. The voices may talk between themselves or comment on what you are doing.
Some people find hearing voices as a positive experience. You might find that the voices help you to understand more about your emotions. The voices may be encouraging and comforting. Or they may be helpful such as remind you to do things that you need to do.

You may hear voices that are negative and upsetting. They can threaten you and tell you to hurt yourself or someone else. They can say hurtful or cruel things about you or someone you know. This can be frightening.

You may find that your voices change at different times. They may become more upsetting during difficult or stressful times.

Note: these imaginary voices are NOT Gods, Devils, Angels or Demons from imaginary heavens and hells...
