Today let us remember the anniversary of the passing of President Lincoln. The future of our country demands that we are active in our great Republic. April 14, 1865 or 161 years ago.

On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Though he survived the initial gunshot, Lincoln died the following morning at 7:22 a.m., becoming the first U.S. president assassinated in office. His death immediately elevated Vice President Andrew Johnson to the presidency at a moment when the Civil War had only just ended.

What is often forgotten is that Lincoln’s murder was only one part of a larger, coordinated plan. Booth and his conspirators intended to assassinate Secretary of State William H. Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson the same night, hoping to plunge the Union government into chaos. While the attack on Seward left him badly wounded but alive, and the would-be assassin sent after Johnson lost his nerve, the broader conspiracy reshaped American history all the same.

Booth fled the capital, sparking a massive manhunt that ended twelve days later when he was shot and killed in Virginia. The failed and successful attacks that night sent shockwaves through the nation, altered Reconstruction, and left a legacy far larger than the death of one man, marking one of the most consequential turning points in American history.
