Mended Hearts of Missoula (Chapter 324) recently recognized M. Kathleen Mielke with a Certificate of Appreciation for her 28 years (1993-2020) making heart-shaped pillows (11,610 in all) for cardiac patients at Providence St. Patrick Hospital.

Ray Aten, Chapter chair, noted “We very much appreciate her efforts and acknowledge the importance of these pillows in our recovery, both as a comfort and as a tool for preventing post chest surgery complications.”

The certificate of appreciation was presented to Kathleen Mielke at her home in Florence, MT, due to respect for her health and the limitations due to COVID.

Kathleen Mielke began making heart pillows following an invitation from her neighbor, Tim Engberg, an administrator at St. Patrick Hospital. After consultations with the International Heart Institute of Montana on design, size, stuffing, and remuneration, she began production which continued for 28 years.

Kathleen Mielke supported her family as a seamstress for much of her life. She has produced everything from leather goods and bear rugs to heart pillows. During her time producing heart pillows she had multiple surgeries but was never late on the delivery of them to the International Heart Institute.

Kathleen is the mother of eight and parent to two of her sisters, grandmother of eighteen grandchildren, and great-grandmother of eighteen great-grandchildren.

Mended Hearts of Missoula is one of over 300 chapters of Mended Hearts (mendedhearts.org), a non-profit organization of heart patients, families, and caregivers founded in 1953 by Dwight Harken, an early pioneer of heart surgery, and several of his first patients. Mended Hearts is dedicated to inspiring hope and improving the quality of life of heart patients and their families through ongoing peer to peer support, education, and advocacy.

This is my heart pillow from my 2005 triple bypass surgery. The woman who sewed the pillows, is retiring. Our Mended Hearts Chapter is going to recognize her work for all of us open heart patients. She has sewn over 11,600 cough pillows. We want her to see that we truly appreciate her work and how much it meant to us. If you have a pillow as well and would like to join us in thanking her, take a picture of yourself with your pillow and send it by email to [email protected]

Worthy advice!

Make Me The Bad Guy - Dr. David Sabgir

Friends,
I have to get this off my chest with less than 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

I’m scared.
I’m actually very scared.

Let me first say this.

Social connection is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to good health.
That is a large part of the reason the last 8 months have sucked, so bad.
Sucked in ways that no one else can even begin to understand.
With COVID, elections, economy, etc. - my family, friends, patients and neighbors are stressed and anxious.
Most days, I think we all are.

Our WWAD Mission Statement, that we LIVE by every single day is to:
‘Inspire communities through movement and conversation’.
Conversation = Social connection
Social connection this year has been out the window.
With the Kilimanjaro Challenge (https://walkwithadoc.org/challenge), you are buoying us and we love you for it.
Thank you.

Here’s the nasty stuff:

In my opinion, the COVID positive tests, hospital admissions, and tragically, deaths will be obscene in December and January. They’re already horrible today.
They are going to be disastrous because the perfect storm is coming.

We can prevent the storm. Here are the World Health Organization (WHO)'s recommendations: https://bit.ly/38SfZvl

This is what I hear from many of my OhioHealth patients:
“This will be over ‘after the election’.”
Nope. That was never the case and actually It’s much worse since (https://on.wsj.com/38JhLyz)
It cannot be explained by ‘more testing’.
Yes, the percentage of people dying has improved but the numbers are increased overall due to the sheer volume of positive cases.
And, unfortunately many are suffering long term even if they had mild or no symptoms (https://on.wsj.com/3eXWRwO)
This is not ‘fake news’.
Wearing a mask is NOT political. It is lifesaving.
This is science.
This is 100% real.
I have no skin in the game to try and scare you, I want to make you laugh and enjoy life.
Now, I want you to survive.

I hate saying this next sentence, but it is true.

In 2020, sitting down, inside, across from loved ones without a mask (even for a meal) is, unfortunately, dangerous.

I love Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday. Family, food, friends, football - it’s the best.

Surveys are showing that 40% of us are planning on gatherings greater than 10 people and many will not be wearing masks.
No one will be wearing masks while they are eating.

There are some good recommendations in this article (https://bit.ly/3eUMSbs) from our local paper The Columbus Dispatch.
Here is what the CDC recommends: https://bit.ly/35sCRPJ

Now, finally to the subject line, please make me the bad guy.

Feel free to share this post or forward this email: https://conta.cc/3lsWFbd

Feel free to say the jerk cardiologist said it was a really bad idea.
Whatever you need to do, use me.

I’ve had some patients share they are absolving their kids/grandkids from guilt by saying ‘not this year’.
Their kids, to a person, appreciated that immensely. They’re scared about transmitting it.

There is plenty of internet advice on how to have a creative alternative Thanksgiving.
None of them approach the real thing.

The question we have to ask ourselves is, “Is it worth it?”
“Is it worth the high risk?”

I fully understand that this will not change many plans.
But, if it changes just one family’s plan, it's worth it.

The vaccines are right around the corner; they literally are https://nyti.ms/32IgGmW
Monoclonal antibodies are right around the corner https://bit.ly/2GXD8ke
I want to guarantee the next 20, 30, 50 Thanksgiving’s and not sacrifice them for this year.

I love you guys.
That is the reason I felt I had to send this.
David
