Despite learning that his assumption had been incorrect, Jimi repeated the insults and threats and insisted I owed him an apology. I’m still trying to figure out how that apology might sound:

“Jimi, please assume to accept my most sincere apologies for not having done what you assumed I did and wrongly accused me of and then insulted, threatened and blocked me over, even though I didn’t do it, and now, despite all the evidence and facts to the contrary, you apparently still think I did it even though I didn’t, because you’re not one to let facts get in the way of what you want to wrongly assume and believe . . . Anyway, please assume I’m sorry for the things you wrongly assumed.”

In the Missoula Current:

“Yet instead of protecting this corridor, federal agencies are approving extensive logging and road construction while simultaneously redefining habitat security into meaninglessness. . . It is a redefinition designed to make habitat loss disappear on paper.”

Dave Stalling writes, A grizzly bear does not care about bureaucratic definitions. It cares whether the landscape provides enough secure habitat to survive. One acre is not habitat security.

“When agencies redefine habitat security down to a single acre, when genetic connectivity is reduced to relocating a handful of bears instead of restoring landscapes, and when politicians seek to circumvent scientific review to satisfy political constituencies, the issue is no longer simply about grizzly bears. It is about whether science or politics will guide wildlife conservation in America.”

And that is why I stop for wild roses.
Not because they are perfect,
but because they are wild,
because they are free.
Because they have never traded
their wildness for approval.

by David Stalling Wild roses do not ask permission. They climb where the wind invites them, spill over forgotten fences, thread themselves through stone and thorn, and bloom in places no gardener planned. Their petals are not measured. Their colors are not selected from a catalog. No careful hand ha...

“Seeing these heavily laden trees got me wondering: Why do mast years happen? But perhaps the most fascinating question is this: How do trees coordinate it?”

“The Western Montana GLBTQ+ Community Center is not a very open understanding and accepting place. . . I've made a few friends there, but most people seem very cliquish, unfriendly, and standoffish. For a group that strives for acceptance, I often find them surprisingly unaccepting of others. . . If you're part of the inner circle, you'll probably feel welcome. If you're not, my experience suggests otherwise.”

“They're afraid of wolves. They're afraid of grizzly bears. They're afraid of mountain lions. They're afraid of wildlife they don't fully understand and don't want to learn about. Rather than accepting that these animals have a rightful place in healthy ecosystems, many would rather eliminate them than coexist with them. . . Which raises an obvious question: if their beliefs are so strong, why are they so frightened?”

“The agencies did not make this change because new science suddenly showed that grizzly bears can thrive in tiny habitat fragments. No such science exists. Instead, the definition changed as federal agencies sought to justify a major logging and road-building project that would not have met the previous standard. Rather than redesign the project to protect habitat security, they redefined habitat security itself. That is not science-based management. It is bureaucratic convenience.”

“Scientists have discovered that crows can remember individual humans for years. If you mistreat a crow, it may remember you long after you've forgotten the encounter. Worse, it may tell its friends. . . Imagine that. A bird with a gossip network.”

“This world is intricately stitched together, boys. Every thread we pull, we know not how it affects the design of things. We’re but children on this earth, pulling bolts out of the Ferris wheel, thinking ourselves to be gods.” — Arn Peeples (William H. Macy)

Train Dreams, a movie about a logger and railroad worker in the American West at the turn of the 20th Century, is a great, powerful movie.
