The Common Loon is our 2025 Bird of the Year! Imagine a clear summer evening in the north woods. Above you, the bands of the Milky Way framed by the dark spindly boughs of spruce and fir. And cutting though the stillness comes an otherworldly laughter. An eerie yodel...

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC) successfully rescued three iced-in loons on Paradox Lake on December 24th and 26th, 2024.

Dear Loon Folks, This 20 minute loon video was produced in 1982. Thanks to Dr. Mark Pokras of Tufts University for bringing this to light again and digitalizing it for us all to enjoy. This is the early days of loon monitoring and includes Rawson Wood (the older gentleman near the end of the film), who was the founder of the New Hampshire Loon Preservation Committee. Enjoy!

So happy they could help this loon on its way.

The fountains at Bellagio Hotel and Casino were paused after a rare bird stopped by for a visit.

I guess we concentrate so much on how they take off, I never considered how they land.

Also watch how difficult it is for loons to walk. That's why they only go on land to nest and why nests are close to the water's edge.

Montana's loon chicks are growing up and are now about 1/2 the size and weight of the adults. They have taken on their new gray plumage that they will wear for the next two years of their lives. While their flight feathers are still growing, next month (September) and into October they will learn how to fly. For now, they are following Mom and sometimes Dad as they perfect their underwater fishing skills. Photo: Bob LeBlanc, near Crystal Lake
