Headwaters Foundation

Headwaters Foundation Working side-by-side with Western Montanans to improve the health of our communities.

At Headwaters Foundation, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. We partner with organizations that work to reduce barriers to health alongside those who face them most. Because when Montana’s children, families and Native American communities are strong and their voices are heard, we can create a Western Montana where all people are healthy and thriving.

Getting fresh, healthy food on the table shouldn’t be a challenge, but in many rural communities, it is. 🍎

Farm Connect Montana (formerly CFAC) is helping change that by making local food more accessible for families and kids across Western Montana. Through programs like Double SNAP Dollars and Kids Who Cook!, they’re helping families stretch food budgets, build skills, and connect with local farmers. When families have access to nutritious food and strong local food systems, it supports healthier communities.

Our GO! (General Operating) Grants provide $8,500 in quick-turnaround funding to nonprofits building health, belonging, and leadership with kids and families in rural Western Montana.

📻 Leaders from Montana Partnership to End Childhood Hunger were on the radio recently talking about their recent film project with , showing how people living in rural communities across Montana are stepping up to make sure all their neighbors have access to healthy food.

As Co-Executive Director KayAnn Miller put it:
💬”It started with one person who got interested and inspired and said, ‘We can do something.’ They just started gathering like-minded people… and created a solution that fit their own community.”

➡️Six inspiring mini-documentaries are available to watch at www.mtpech.org/community-film-project (link in our bio).

Our team is still smiling after Vu Le’s visit to Montana last week!

The turnout was incredible, and it was a powerful reminder of just how important the nonprofit sector is right now. We heard important conversations about what communities and nonprofits need in this moment, including how philanthropy and funders can show up better.

One of the best parts was seeing nonprofit folks connect with each other, swap stories, laugh, and leave feeling fired up and a little less alone. Thank you to everyone who showed up, brought great questions, connected with each other, and helped make the event feel so energizing.

Huge thanks as well to Vu for spending time with our community and sharing so honestly, thoughtfully, and hilariously, to our friends at Montana Nonprofit Association for their partnership in bringing Vu here and making these events happen, and to Missoula Public Library for hosting us in their beautiful space!

➡️ Keep up with Vu at Nonprofit AF!

During , we’re reminded that feeling connected matters, and in rural communities, that can depend on having a place to gather. 🏡

In the Yaak Valley, GO! Grantee Yaak Community Hall has been that place for nearly 100 years. It’s where neighbors come together for meals, meetings, school events, and support—whether that’s picking up food, checking in during a tough time, or finding shelter during emergencies.

In a community where people may have to travel miles to access basic services, spaces like this help reduce isolation and create a sense of belonging that’s essential to health.

We’re grateful to support the Yaak Community Hall as they work to keep this space safe, accessible, and open for the community, now and into the future.

During , we’re highlighting GO! Grantees who help people feel less alone and more supported when they need it most. One of those is Roots & Resilience 💛

Roots & Resilience offers peer-led, community-based support for people navigating mental health challenges, stress, life transitions, and recovery. They meet people where they are, without judgment, and build connection from there.
That kind of support matters, especially right now. As more young people and families are struggling, having spaces that feel welcoming and easy to access can make a real difference.

We’re grateful for organizations like Roots & Resilience that are showing what support can look like in community and making sure more people have somewhere to turn.
