Yesterday’s Cultural Wellness & Art Gathering brought together 66 relatives — youth, adults, young families, Elders, and our Two-Spirit community. We laughed, created, sang, and shared stories that remind us who we are as a community.
Our Honored Elders from the Heritage Living Center showed up strong, filling the space with warmth, laughter, and stories. One even took home a prize for being the “Eldest Elder” — we love our Elders. 🥰
This gathering happened on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, now officially recognized as a state holiday in Montana — and that’s a big deal. It took years of work, heart, and persistence from Marsha Small and others who made sure our people and history are recognized. That means a lot.
We had both traditional and contemporary music — a Cheyenne honor song opened the event, followed by eight cover songs throughout the day, and we closed with multiple round dance songs, with everyone still going strong! Huge thank you to Isiah Walksalong, James Walksalong, Lakeema Williams, and Burton Tallwhiteman for sharing their voices and energy.
Appreciation to our community volunteers — Angel Real Bird, Misty Kellum, Diane Spotted Elk, Shawna Wooden Legs, Dewanda Little Coyote, LaRena LittleLoyoe, Deemya Little Coyote, Sue Shotgunn, and Salley King from Lame Deer High School, who opened the commons area for us and shared her support for community and public health efforts.
Thank you to everyone who came, helped, sang, danced, and brought that good energy. It was a day of culture, healing, and joy — exactly what it needed to be.
