It’s Not a Hiring Problem—It’s a Retention Crisis. The news release tries to paint a bright picture by mentioning the 15 new officers recently hired. What they don’t tell you is that these recruits are simply replacing mid-level, experienced officers who left in waves.
The Ultimate Red Flag: Our veteran officers are leaving for positions at HSI, DEA, Customs, and Border Patrol. In many cases, these federal roles actually pay LESS for the first 3 to 4 years than what the officer was making here.
Think about that: Officers are willingly taking a pay cut and sacrificing their seniority just to get away from the poor treatment and the "games" being played. You don't play with peoples TIME (vacation) and MONEY (overtime) and expect them to stay.
Politics Over Public Safety? The finger-pointing at the Mayor to impact upcoming elections needs to stop. The Mayor doesn't vote the City Council does. These games are being played for political optics, but the only people getting hurt are the city employees and the citizens who depend on us.
Our department has the best training and equipment it’s had in years, but equipment doesn’t answer calls—people do.
Also a bulk of our equipment, training, and overtime comes from GRANTS. There seems to be a major misunderstanding regarding overtime. They see money from STEP, Border Star, and Stone Garden, but those are specialized grant "details" that not every officer can work. Those grants do NOT replace the departmental overtime needed to keep minimum manning on the streets. You cannot fund a municipal police department’s daily operations solely on the back of federal grants.
It’s time for the City to stop the spin and start treating the people who protect Mission with the respect they deserve.
