It’s Not a Hiring Problem—It’s a Retention Crisis. The news release tries to paint a bright picture by mentioning the 15 new officers recently hired. What they don’t tell you is that these recruits are simply replacing mid-level, experienced officers who left in waves.

The Ultimate Red Flag: Our veteran officers are leaving for positions at HSI, DEA, Customs, and Border Patrol. In many cases, these federal roles actually pay LESS for the first 3 to 4 years than what the officer was making here.

Think about that: Officers are willingly taking a pay cut and sacrificing their seniority just to get away from the poor treatment and the "games" being played. You don't play with peoples TIME (vacation) and MONEY (overtime) and expect them to stay.

Politics Over Public Safety? The finger-pointing at the Mayor to impact upcoming elections needs to stop. The Mayor doesn't vote the City Council does. These games are being played for political optics, but the only people getting hurt are the city employees and the citizens who depend on us.

Our department has the best training and equipment it’s had in years, but equipment doesn’t answer calls—people do.

Also a bulk of our equipment, training, and overtime comes from GRANTS. There seems to be a major misunderstanding regarding overtime. They see money from STEP, Border Star, and Stone Garden, but those are specialized grant "details" that not every officer can work. Those grants do NOT replace the departmental overtime needed to keep minimum manning on the streets. You cannot fund a municipal police department’s daily operations solely on the back of federal grants.

It’s time for the City to stop the spin and start treating the people who protect Mission with the respect they deserve.

Fellow members, I want to address the ongoing challenges we face regarding our vacation policy and other departmental policies.

Despite efforts to advocate for improvements that would benefit all departments, we continue to encounter resistance driven by short-sighted and, frankly, selfish interests.

When faced with pushback like, 'no other cities have a vacation policy like this,' I would challenge that perspective. It seems highly doubtful that other cities:

Implement a nine-month overtime freeze affecting every department except the Fire Department.

Change a fundamental employee benefit, like the vacation policy, abruptly and unilaterally—seemingly just to simplify administrative tasks for certain departments, such as HR. The lack of accurate reporting on the TCP system is a management failure, not a justification to penalize staff.

It's easy to make these punitive decisions when you work a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule, enjoy every weekend and holiday off, and are compensated exceptionally well.

Morale across the board has never been lower. We need to demand a shift away from this pattern of poor leadership from both past and present City Managers. Something has to change.

🚨🚨🚨 Training Announcement 🚨🚨🚨

Calling all K9 Units! The LRGV Academy, in collaboration with the Texas Narcotic Officer Association, and the Brownsville Police Department, will be hosting the 2025 TNOA Conference K9 Competition.

The competition date is Monday August 18 at the Brownsville Event Center. Any full-time law enforcement officer assigned to a canine unit is welcomed to compete. ( No Cost )
Aside from the competition, the LRGV Academy will be hosting a two-day training seminar, before the competition, on August 16 and 17. This seminar will focus on training local K9 units on Fentanyl Detection utilizing actual Fentanyl training aids.
Yes. You read that correctly. Actual fentanyl, not pseudo or synthetic aids. Real fentanyl will be on site to train local police canines on fentanyl detection.

The National Narcotic Detector Dog Association will provide instruction and lecture on best practices and protocols for training with real fentanyl. Handlers will also have the opportunity to attempt fentanyl certification with their canines.
The seminar will also host multiple training sites, and all other standard narcotic odors will also be available for training and certification. We will also have explosive detection available for explosive dog teams and cadaver detection for human remains detection teams. Patrol dogs are also welcomed to work on apprehension and tracking scenarios.

These training opportunities do not come along every day. No other organization is offering this type of training to local and state units. Do not miss out! The best part is that it's all Free. All we ask is that you come with an open mind, an eagerness to train, and that you check your ego at the door. For more information contact Javier Solis @ [email protected] or 956-222-9417.
