Bittersweet for sure. So happy for you both as you step into this next chapter, but truly sad knowing we won’t get to see you like we have. Thank you for 27 years of service, dedication, and impact. You are deeply appreciated and will be missed.
Today we celebrate the retirements of Sergeant D. Hennessey and Captain J. Ivins as they each conclude an incredible 27-year career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
A career of nearly three decades is defined by more than just professional milestones. It is built on the personal sacrifices made behind the scenes, such as missed holidays, missed family milestones, and late-night calls that turn to long shifts demanding more time away from their loved ones.
Sgt. Hennessey rose through the ranks and spent time at the Central Men’s Jail, Theo Lacy Facility, Lake Forest Police Services, and worked in several specialty details alongside his K9 partner, Merit. That’s just to name a few! Sgt. Hennessey always went full speed, earning the trust of his deputies and mentored those around him. He was dependable, someone to lean on, and ready for anything on a moments notice.
Captain Ivins is well known for his work with the K9 team, joining the team as a K9 handler with K9 Rhino and returning to over see the team as the K9 Sergeant. He also spent time at the Central Men’s Jail, James A. Musick Facility, and oversaw the Behaviorial Health Bureau.
Sgt. Hennessey’s and Captain Ivins’ careers have crossed paths a few times in their careers and together their career ends here at the City of Mission Viejo. Today we thank you for the years you gave to us, and we wish you a well-deserved retirement filled with the family time you so often set aside for the sake of others. Congratulations, you will be missed.
