What really matters to donors? ❤️

At this month’s AFP Greater San Fernando Valley program, From the Donor’s Seat: What Matters Most, our panel of community leaders shared candid perspectives on what drives giving and how fundraisers can build stronger, more meaningful relationships.

Panelists Marty Cooper, Tamara Gurney, and Rowan Vansleve offered insights across individual, corporate, and nonprofit perspectives, while facilitator Pegi Matsuda, MA, CFRE guided a thoughtful and engaging conversation.

Several themes stood out:

👉 Relationships remain at the heart of philanthropy.
👉 Donors want to understand the impact of their investments.
👉 Authenticity and trust are essential to long-term engagement.
👉 Every donor has different motivations, priorities, and decision-making processes.
👉 Research is key. Listening is often more important than asking.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a meaningful discussion! We’re grateful to be part of a community committed to growing together and strengthening the practice of relationship‑centered fundraising.

✨ Member Spotlight: Candice Courtney McFadyen, Director of Development at

Candice’s path into fundraising was shaped early on by a strong family culture of service and volunteering. After completing graduate school, she knew she wanted to build a career in nonprofit fundraising. That journey has led her to organizations with powerful missions focused on addressing homelessness and strengthening local communities. Candice joined AFP Greater San Fernando Valley after relocating to the area to meet other nonprofit professionals and expand her network.

💡 One strategy she’s found especially effective is generating tailored messaging at scale. This can be through personalized emails, thank-you notes, or impact updates that reference past gifts, specific programs they supported, or their preferred communication tone.

🎶 Fun fact: Outside of work, Candice sings and writes music.

Her advice to fellow fundraisers?

“Fall in love with the mission of your organization. Use it as fuel to fundraise for your organization.”

Check out our upcoming events to connect with Candice and the rest of the AFP Greater San Fernando Valley community!
