A reminder from Chris Treviso is below. Thanks Chris!
Dear Fellow Riders,
In light of the recent tragedy involving a member of our local riding community, many of us have been thinking about the risks of rattlesnake encounters on our trails. While it is heartbreaking to lose a fellow rider, we can honor their memory by staying informed and keeping each other safe.
I wanted to share some practical information regarding rattlesnake bites and how we can minimize our risks while out on the mountain. It is important to remember that most snake bites are accidents; snakes generally do not want to bite and will only do so as a last resort when they feel cornered or threatened. We are riding through their home, and with a little extra awareness, we can coexist safely.
To help keep everyone safe during our upcoming rides, please keep these tips in mind:
• Stay Centered on the Trail: Stick to the established path. Snakes often sun themselves or hide right at the edge of the trail where the dirt meets the brush.
• Avoid Overgrown Single Tracks: If a trail is heavily overgrown, it’s best to avoid it. Tall grass makes it impossible to see where you are placing your feet or your tires.
• Watch Where You Step: If you need to stop or put a foot down, make sure you can see the ground clearly. Avoid stepping blindly into brush or thick scrub where a snake might be resting.
• Just Keep Riding: If you spot a snake, do not get off your bike to move it or get a closer look. Maintain a safe distance and continue riding once the path is clear.
• Scan Ahead: Keep your eyes moving and scan the trail in front of you. Snakes blend in perfectly with shadows and branches, so staying alert is your best defense.
Let’s continue to enjoy our beautiful trails while staying respectful of the wildlife that lives there.
Stay safe and see you on the dirt,
Christina Trevizo
