Want to learn how to protect your home and community from wildfire through smart gardening? There's so much you can do in your own yard to reduce risk and increase safety.

Join Yana Valachovic on Saturday, April 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m. to learn about defensible space, fire-resistant landscaping, fire hazard reduction and more.

Valachovic serves as UC Cooperative Extension’s Forest Advisor and County Director for Humboldt and Del Norte counties and as the University of California's Fire Network Community Resiliency and Built Environment Program Lead.

At this event, she’ll share key insights on landscaping design, building maintenance and practical strategies that can make a real difference in protecting your property from wildfire. You'll also hear about her latest research findings and learn about low-cost actions you can take to safeguard your home and family through firesafe garden design and upkeep.

This free event takes place at the Humboldt County Public Library in Eureka, located at 1313 Third St. Pre-registration is not required.

The Salmon Creek Fire Protection District will be meeting on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, 10:00 a.m. at the Fire House (3588 Thomas Rd).
The public is invited and encouraged to attend to see what we've been working on.
We are looking for a person or two who would be interested running for a seat on the newly formed Southern Humboldt Fire & Rescue Joint Powers Alliance (So Hum Fire) Board of Directors. If you're that person, please attend the meeting so we can let you know what would be involved.

The Salmon Creek Fire Protection District is having a meeting on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fire House (3588 Thomas Rd).

The public is welcome at this meeting where we will be considering the adoption of two resolutions which will place the Special Tax on the 2025-26 FY Tax Roll.

Just got some great news concerning the Measure Z funding from the County...we will be getting a brand new Type 6 engine based on the allotment that was decided on at today's Board of Supervisor's meeting! Thanks so much to our Supervisor Michelle Smith Bushnell, Chief Nick Pape, and the Humboldt County Fire Chiefs' Association for continuing to push for this much-needed funding. A Type 6 is basically a pickup with a slip-in tank/pump, also known as a 'quick attack'. We already have one of those, 6148, and the dream would be to have 4 or 5 of those spread out around the community. We're on our way to that!
