The Story of Juliette’s Pearls
Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, was born on October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Georgia. Her family and friends called her Daisy. After meeting Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, she became interested in starting a new youth movement in the USA. She wanted girls from all backgrounds to have the opportunity to learn about nature and develop courage, confidence and character.

In 1915, Juliette sold her pearls valued then at $8,000 to fund the cost of expanding the Girl Scout movement across the United States.

Millions of Girl Scouts — both former and present — are encouraged to wear pearls 10/31 to honor the birthday of founder Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low’s selfless act of generosity that allowed the organization to survive and prosper.
