It’s common for veterans to correlate their life challenges to their military service. But a lot of them are just a part of life and much more common than they may realize.

Surfing doesn’t fix everything, but spending time with people navigating similar challenges in life and talking about what works and what doesn’t can be useful.

This fall a group of 10 will spend every Saturday together, surfing, talking, and sharing meals.

Must be able to attend at least 3 of 5 weeks

The group meets every Saturday to surf with instructors, then gathers for brunch. No experience is needed, and all equipment and costs are covered. Bonfire graduation on final week.

A huge thank you to Matapalo Surf Experience for being such an important part of every Surf Brigade Costa Rica retreat. Bringing veterans from across the United States to a place as remote as Matapalo and delivering a world class surf experience simply wouldn’t be possible without your team.

What makes it even more special goes far beyond the waves. Because of you, our veterans experience the true spirit of Costa Rica through the jungle, the incredible food, and most importantly, the people.

The amazing instructors including Lance Noel and Dani Alvarez Lezcano who patiently help disabled military veterans catch their first waves ever, and show/teach us about the jungle- truly a therapeutic experience. And the real king of every trip…….Edixon! Who is a culinary wizard and keeps everyone fed and fueled all week long.

And a personal note, I’m grateful that what started as a partnership has become something more important, a genuine friendship. Aaron Garcia , Taylor Gwinn , your family, and the entire team have become people I look forward to seeing every year, and it meant a lot to welcome you to Florida as well.

Already counting down until we’re back together. Pura Vida. 🤙

This fall, Surf Brigade is running a five week coached surf program in Miramar Beach, FL. Every veteran is welcome.

Professional surf coaches. All equipment provided. Lunch after every session. Group debrief and discussion. Zero cost to veterans.

There are people who can describe what surf therapy is, and then there are people who can explain why it changes lives.

Susanne is a clinical psychologist who joined Surf Brigade in Costa Rica. She gave voice to something we witness every time we serve veterans but often struggle to fully express. Her perspective helps connect the science of psychology with the healing that happens in the ocean.

If you have ever wondered why surfing can have such a powerful impact on military veterans, take a few minutes to watch this video. Susanne’s insight brings clarity to an experience that is difficult to put into words.

NO ONE brings the stoke like Alex!

There is no video of him from this trip, because he was the man behind the camera, taking nearly every photo and video you’ve seen from our retreat.

When he blew his Achilles playing soccer right before the trip, he did not say he might miss it. He ordered an extra orthopedic boot just in case he destroyed the first one in the jungle. That is commitment.

Alex is also one of those people who feels like your best friend within minutes of meeting him. He is a stranger to no one. His storytelling is fully animated and unforgettable, but just as important, when he listens, he is locked in and makes you feel like the most important person in the room.

On top of all that, he is an incredible surfer and officially introduced the group to the term “pig dogging,” which is when a surfer grabs the rail of the board while riding deep inside a barrel to stay stable and make the wave.

Alex, we love you dude. Everyone loves you. Keep charging homie.

Before Surf Brigade even had a name, Evan believed in the mission.

He was the very first person to donate toward providing surf therapy for veterans, and he’s continued supporting us ever since, donating surfboards, helping raise funds, and most recently - attending our retreat to help veterans surf all week, and learn about their body’s, including some truly epiphinal moments.

As a strength and conditioning coach and gym owner, Evan has an incredible ability to help people understand what’s really happening with their bodies and lives, then build a plan to move forward. That gift has impacted countless people, including many veterans.

We’re grateful to have you in our corner brother. Can’t wait for the next workout and the next surf session.
