The goal is to empower our clients. All requests must be made in person during Caritas hours and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The support service began when a group of caring folks at St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church saw an opportunity to assist individuals and families who visit area churches seeking assistance for urgent and immediate needs. Most churches have pastoral discretionary fund
s for this purpose. By pooling funds with area churches and other supporting organizations, clients can receive more help and only have to visit one location. The money comes from a consortium of area churches, other philanthropic organizations, businesses and individuals. Caritas is run by a part time administrator, five managers, and a board of five volunteers. Supporting organizations include: St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church, Lakeland Pantry, Calvary Lutheran Church, Lac du Flambeau Lion’s Club, Lac du Flambeau Community Presbyterian Church, St. Matthias Thrift Shop, Northwoods Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, Holy Family Catholic Church, Peace Lutheran Church, Jeff’s Auto, Ascension Lutheran Church, Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, and additional donors. The way Caritas assists clients is always evolving. The goal is to empower our clients to be all they can be and not enable them to become less than productive citizens. Some of the assistance offered includes: prescription medication (must show the prescription), duplicate driver’s license, work boots/clothing required by employer, clothing and household items, furniture, and auto repair. Under certain circumstances, Caritas may assist with utility bills or gasoline. Caritas also refers to other agencies that may be of assistance. All requests are evaluated on a case by case basis by an interview team of caring volunteers. Persons requesting assistance must be interviewed in person during Caritas hours in order to determine if they may receive help. Clients agree that Caritas provides more than money and referrals. Volunteers listen and offer compassion, problem solving, and hope to those in desperate need. Caritas - Minocqua is located at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in downtown Minocqua.
