Thank you The Minnesota 100 Club! Keep praying for Sgt Leon. 🇺🇸 City of Richfield Police Department

Today, the Richfield Police Department was honored to welcome Julie Gotham, Executive Director of the Minnesota 100 Club, and Sheriff Dawanna Witt, Vice President of the Minnesota 100 Club, as they presented a financial donation to Sergeant Mario Leon and his family to support the recovery from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

On April 29, 2026, Sergeant Leon was shot while attempting to apprehend a fleeing suspect. As Sergeant Leon continues his recovery, we are deeply grateful for the support shown by the Minnesota 100 Club and its commitment to Minnesota’s first responders and their families.

The Minnesota 100 Club provides critical financial assistance to the families of first responders who are seriously injured or killed while protecting and serving our communities. Their support extends to city, county, state, and federal first responders who are injured or lose their lives in the line of duty within Minnesota.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Minnesota 100 Club for standing beside our officers and their families during challenging times. Their generosity serves as a powerful reminder of the strong support network behind Minnesota’s public safety professionals.

HANDS OFF OUR HORSES! 🐎

The Minneapolis Mounted Patrol is the last one left in the entire state of Minnesota — and the City Council just tried to kill it again.

Just a few months ago, during the 2026 budget process, the Council stripped funding for the Mounted Patrol. Once again, they tried to put these proud horses out to pasture and weaken community policing in our city.

The Mounted Patrol does incredible work in the community. Officers on horseback are far more approachable — people feel comfortable coming up to talk with them. Kids especially love the horses, which helps build positive relationships and trust between the police and our neighborhoods. They provide a highly visible, calming presence at parades, parks, crowd events, and in areas where patrol cars can’t easily go.

They are part of our city, our police, our community, our horses.

Tell the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor: Hands Off Our Horses!

Take Action Today:
- Call or email your City Council Member
- Call or email Mayor Jacob Frey
- Demand they restore full funding for the Minneapolis Mounted Patrol

Subject: Please Restore Funding for the Minneapolis Mounted Patrol – Hands Off Our Horses!

Dear Council Member [Last Name] or Mayor Frey,

I am writing to urge you to restore full funding for the Minneapolis Mounted Patrol.

This unit is the last Mounted Patrol in the entire state of Minnesota. Just a few months ago, during the 2026 budget process, the City Council stripped its funding. I strongly oppose this decision.

The Mounted Patrol provides a unique and valuable service to our city. Officers on horseback are far more approachable, making it easier for community members — especially children — to interact positively with police. Kids love the horses, which helps build trust and strong relationships between the police department and our neighborhoods. They also offer a highly visible, calming presence at parades, parks, large events, and in areas where patrol cars cannot easily go.

The Mounted Patrol is an important part of our city, our police, our community, and our horses.

I respectfully ask that you support restoring full funding for this valuable program so it can continue serving Minneapolis.

Thank you for your time and service to our city.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

Never forget Patrolman Fred Babcock! 🇺🇸 City of Richfield Police Department

This week, we join the nation in observing National Police Week. Originally established by presidential proclamation by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

Over its history, the Richfield Police Department has only lost one officer in the line of duty: Fred Babcock. On June 4th, 1949, at 02:20 a.m., Richfield Police Patrolman Fred Babcock was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a burglary call at a grocery store at 76th and Lyndale Avenue South. Patrolman Babcock's partner got out of the patrol car and Patrolman Babcock continued to drive around the business. He located the getaway car but when he ordered the men out of it, they opened fire with a .30 caliber rifle, fatally wounding him. The suspects fled but were all eventually apprehended.

Officer Babcock was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific.

The body-cam video was officially released by the City of Richfield Police Department on May 11, 2026.

This footage powerfully highlights:
- The constant, unpredictable dangers police officers face every single day — even on a routine car prowler call.
- The critical need for rigorous **tactical EMS training** and immediate access to life-saving equipment like tourniquets (Sgt. Mario Leon’s hand wound was quickly controlled thanks to one).
- The quick thinking of **Sgt. Kristian Schultz**, who returned fire in defense of his partner, called out “Shots fired! Officer down,” and promptly applied the tourniquet to Sgt. Leon while requesting medics.

**Shoutout to the additional responding officers who arrived quickly** — their rapid support and professionalism helped secure the scene and ensure aid was provided without delay.

**Hats off to the police dispatchers** who handled this call with calm professionalism and precision, just as they do every single day — coordinating resources and keeping everyone informed under pressure. Their vital role often goes unseen but is absolutely critical.

Strong leadership and transparency from the Richfield Police Department for promptly releasing the full bodycam footage.

The Lake Minnetonka Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 6 commends these officers involved.

🚔 **Police Week 2026 Begins Today in Washington, D.C.**

Today marks the start of National Police Week (May 10–16), a time when law enforcement officers, survivors, families, and supporters from across the nation gather in our nation’s capital to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year, we proudly join in honoring ** Paul Police Department Officer Felicia Reilly**. In 2010, while responding to a 911 hang-up call, Officer Reilly was assaulted—knocked to the ground and violently attacked—sustaining a traumatic brain injury in the line of duty. She fought bravely for nearly 15 years, living with the devastating effects of that injury until her passing on March 1, 2025. Officer Reilly became the first female St. Paul officer to die from injuries sustained on the job. Her courage, dedication, and resilience continue to inspire all who wear the badge. Saint Paul Police Federation

Law enforcement officers, survivors, and loved ones are heading to Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to Officer Reilly and the many other heroes remembered on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The **Minnesota FOP** is proud to play a leading role in this year’s events. Our dedicated team of volunteers has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help organize and support Police Week activities. Minnesota FOP is especially honored to have **two of our law enforcement officers serving on the board of directors** for this important event.

We will also be joined by officers from across Minnesota riding with the ** Enforcement United Inc. (LEU)** bike riders—an emotional and powerful part of Police Week that brings together riders to honor the fallen.

**Key Events This Week:**
- **May 13th** – Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall
- **May 15th** – Fraternal Order of Police National Memorial Service at the U.S. Capitol

To all our brothers and sisters traveling to D.C., our volunteers, riders, and everyone supporting from home—thank you. National Fraternal Order of Police

We remember. We honor. We ride. We stand together.

Keeping fentanyl off our streets is about protecting lives.

On April 29, detectives with our West Metro Drug Task Force with assistance from HCSO’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) executed a search warrant in Minneapolis as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.During the search, investigators recovered:

-A loaded sawed-off shotgun
-Multiple bags of suspected fentanyl
-A loaded Smith and Wesson firearm
-A loaded magazine
-Ammunition
-A loaded Hi-Point pistol
-$5,105 cash

The total amount of fentanyl was approximately 2,016.97 grams – that’s 4.5 pounds! 28-year-old Dahaven Donnell Lewis has been arrested and charged with three felony offenses related to narcotics and weapons.

Fentanyl is one of the most dangerous substances impacting our communities, and it only takes a small amount to have deadly consequences. Efforts like this are part of a broader focus to reduce the presence of fentanyl and prevent harm before it happens.

Thanks to the work of the West Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF), a multi-jurisdictional task force supported by the North Central High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program and includes officers from departments all over Hennepin County including HCSO, Orono, Medina, West Hennepin Public Safety, Minnetrista, South Lake Minnetonka, Edina, Richfield, Eden Prairie, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, and Minnetonka.
