Meet Fulo. He is our newest Houndhaven Helps doggie. Dr. Ruddle at Animal Cancer Care clinic reached out saying that sweet Fulo needed our help with electrochemotherapy. His owner had maxed out his ability to pay in paying for Fulo's surgery to remover the cancer. She felt that Fulo and his owner deserved our help, so we agreed enthusiastically. His owner's story is fairly long but I think worth the read so you can see what kind of people we help. In summary, his owner is a military hero who, like so many, suffers from PTSD. When Fulo came into his life, he transformed it. But now the family who loves and owes Fulo so much are facing another fight--Fulo's cancer. They need help, and we are so grateful to be able to provide it, thanks to our generous donors! If you would like to be one of Fulo's Houndhaven Heroes, simply make a donation at www.houndhaven.org and use the Contact Us link to let us know the donation is for Fulo.

"Fulo came into my life in 2017, during one of the darkest periods I have ever faced. After leaving the military, I was diagnosed with severe PTSD/ During my service, I was deployed to Afghanistan, where I was honored as a war hero after saving the lives of fellow soldiers during combat and eliminating Taliban threats. I was also awarded the Combat Action Badge. Later, I served in Africa fighting terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab and endured some of the most intense military training imaginable. When I came home, I was no longer the same person.

The anxiety, depression, insomnia, and memories of war began taking over my life. In order to avoid relying completely on medication, I was given an emotional support dog. That is when Fulo entered my life.

From the very first day, Fulo became more than a dog. He became my companion, my peace, and at times, my reason to keep going. Whenever my anxiety becomes overwhelming, he lays beside me. During sleepless nights, he stays awake with me as if he knows I am struggling. When he sensed sadness or depression, he refuses to leave my side. Fulo understands my pain without me ever saying a word.

In our family, we treat him like one of our children. He is always with me, walking beside me, comforting me, and standing by my side during both the good days and the hardest ones. The truth is that Fulo has helped me survive battles that never truly ended after war.

Recently, our family received heartbreaking news: Fulo was diagnosed with cancer. It has been emotionally devastating for all of us. Still, we continue fighting together, just as we always have. But now we need help. The chemotherapy treatments have become a major financial burden on our family, and today I humbly ask for compassion, not only for me, but for Fulo, the dog who truly helped save my life when I felt completely lost. Without your help, this final fight may not be possible. Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for your kindness, and for helping me continue this journey alongside my best friend."

Traveling with Ro.....
White Sands National Park. AKA the world’s largest kitty litter box that I was absolutely forbidden to roll in. Rude.

My humans kept saying things like “look at the stunning gypsum dunes” while I was out there conducting very serious sniff investigations on every tumbleweed and suspicious lizard footprint. Honestly, I don’t know why they put up signs saying “leave no trace” when I was clearly prepared to leave at least 47 paw prints and possibly one dramatic zoomie trench down a dune.

The sand is so white my humans looked like they were walking inside a giant powdered donut. Meanwhile, I was out there looking like a celebrity in my sunglasses while the humans squinted into the sun like confused meerkats. Every photo became a supermodel shoot against the glowing dunes while I stood there trying to calculate how many snacks I deserved for hiking through what is basically hot beach flour. Minimum payment: three treats and emotional support bacon.

And let’s discuss sledding down the dunes. Humans willingly climbed giant hills just to slide right back down them laughing like maniacs. I’ve seen squirrels make more responsible choices. Naturally I supervised the chaos like the professional desert explorer I am.

Still… I gotta admit… the place looked like another planet. Quiet, endless white dunes, mountains in the distance, and sunsets so pretty even I stopped sniffing for a full seven seconds. That’s basically spiritual growth.

11/10 experience thanks to my sunglasses making me look cooler than everyone else on the dunes combined. I basically became the canine mayor of White Sands.

More bad news at Houndhaven. Precious Birdie (HH class of 2020) passed away last month at the age of 10. She had a splenic tumor that took over her abdomen very quickly, and her family had to make the decision to put her to sleep, as it was most likely malignant. Birdie went through a lot during the correction of her crooked foot, so we wish she could have had more than six years with her family. It was not to be. We take comfort in our belief that she is now in heaven playing with all the HH dogs who have gone before her. Have fun, Birdie--you earned it!
