Liz shared her story of being diagnosed with a rare salivary gland cancer at age 22 and how physical activity helped her manage this experience. By focusing on what she could control, like running, hiking or yoga, she was empowered to feel less afraid of the uncontrollable. Over 11 years since her diagnosis, Liz continues to be a strong advocate for rare cancer research through fundraising and hosting BLG Pop-Up events in New York City

"Getting involved with Brave Like Gabe and starting to fundraise helped me learn how to talk about cancer and fight the stigma and stereotypes that persist about cancer and people with cancer."

☀️ We are excited to announce that registration is open for the 9th Annual Brave Like Gabe 5K happening on June 25th, 2026!☀️

“Until further notice, celebrate everything” was Gabe Grunewald’s mantra for how she wanted to live despite a rare cancer diagnosis. In that same spirit, we view the 9th Annual Brave Like Gabe 5K--held on Gabe's birthday--as more than just a race. It’s a celebration of life, of community, and of the hope it takes to keep going despite challenges.

You can register for the St. Paul flagship event, at various pop-up 5Ks happening in June, or run virtually (we'll ship your race tee and bib directly to you!). Don't miss the early bird pricing! Register here: https://haku.ly/0c8abfea68

In 2020, Joel Stetler shared his story with the Brave Like Gabe community and described living with a rare sarcoma diagnosis: “Amanda and I have always referred to cancer as the monster in our car. He got in one day and won’t get out. But we’ve found that we can still make the decisions about where this car is heading and what we’re going to do when we get there. With that in mind, I like to intentionally live life with the visualization that one day, we’ll get to kick him out of the car. Being means telling the monster in your car that he doesn’t get to drive.”

Years later and still living with fibromyxoid sarcoma, Joel is joining us for an online Brave Conversations event that will include storytelling, a Q&A session and updates from the Brave Like Gabe Foundation. Please join us for this meaningful program on Tuesday March 3rd at 12PM CT. More info ➡️ https://www.bravelikegabe.org/events/brave-conversations-mar-2026

Following a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis, Ben knew that running might look a little different from what he was used to. He kept an open mind and laced up his shoes. He persevered through chemotherapy treatment and surgery by moving his body which helped fight fatigue, nausea, and other side effects. He's proudly earned PRs in multiple races following colostomy reversal in January 2024.

"Be patient with yourself. I would rest after my infusions and then a few days later I’d start with a 2 mile jog to ease into it. It was important for me to keep a good head on my shoulders and adjust my expectations on exercise." -Ben Davenny

Ben treats each day and each step as a gift. He has big dreams for some upcoming road races and he continues to fiercely advocate for exercise during cancer treatment.

"Being a cancer survivor forever changes your relationship with time. It seems to pass too quickly, and there's always doubt about how much of it you're going to get. It's bewildering. But maybe that's why I love running so much. A minute of running can feel like an eternity if you're going as fast as you can — arms pumping, legs burning, lungs begging to accept another short breath of air just to make it a little bit farther. Faster." -Gabe Grunewald

Thank you 2025.

Here are a few highlights of the past year. 💙

We Cycled for Survival in Boston in February and New York City in March as part of our support of research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center;

In Duluth, we cheered on our Grandma’s Marathon Weekend runners as they ran the 5K, Half, Full, and Challenge races.

We celebrated Gabe in the month of June with a birthday party and a live Brave Conversations event;

September brought the 8th Annual Brave Like Gabe 5K with over 1,000 participants all over the world;

October held the Twin Cities Marathon and 10 Mile events from Minneapolis to St. Paul;

We chased our TCS NYC Marathon charity runners across all 5 boroughs in November in celebration of 26.2 miles and raising over $100K for rare cancer research.

See you in the new year! Until further notice, celebrate everything. 💙
