For Rita, the experience of joining the Cancer to 5K program can be summed up in one word: home. As someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time with other cancer survivors, she felt welcomed by a community of people who understand the journey. The stories that were shared amongst comrades made her feel like she was not alone. After the 12 week training program culminating with the 2026 Brave Like Gabe 5K, she felt like the best part of the program was the people she met who she now calls her friends. And the joyful celebration of life when they all get together.

“The Cancer to 5K program means I can show up as is. No pretending to be more put together than I am. We are all people finding a positive way to take care of ourselves.”

In partnership with the Ulman Foundation, Cancer to 5K is a 12 week training program designed to create community and encourage physical activity for all cancer survivors. You don’t have to be a runner to participate! The primary goal of this program is to get outside for some movement with a supportive community of survivors and volunteer teammates.

Our fall session kicked off at the end of August but is still open for new registrants to join! Cancer survivors of all ages and fitness levels are welcome to join. Volunteer teammates are also invited to participate as running/walking partners and community supporters.

For those who are interested and have considered joining, Rita says it’s worth taking the risk. “Meet beautiful cancer survivors, laugh, share your story, and move the way you want to move.”

Team Brave Like Gabe is on the run in the land down under! 🏃🏾‍♀️🇦🇺🎽

Congratulations to all of our runners who are participating in the TCS Sydney Marathon on Sunday, August 30! The Seventh World Marathon Major, this course takes runners through iconic Sydney landmarks including running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finishing in front of the world-famous Sydney Opera House.

This marathon is one of many races at which Brave Like Gabe participates as an official charity partner. Individuals running as part of Team BLG partner with us to raise money to support rare cancer research while working toward their own movement goals.

From the Twin Cities to London and beyond, Team BLG is running for research all around the world! Thank you to all our Sydney runners for making an impact.

Gabe was a firm believer in the benefits of physical activity and was passionate about encouraging cancer survivors to find ways to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle. In the spirit of her vision, we are excited to be kicking off our next session of Cancer to 5K! In partnership with the Ulman Foundation, This 12 week training program is designed to create community and support physical activity for all cancer survivors. Weekly workouts start Aug 19 leading up to a goal race of the Skechers Hot Chocolate Run in Mpls on Nov 14!

Throughout the month of June, more than 1,000 people around the world participated in the 9th Annual Brave Like Gabe 5K events. 300 people, plus six llamas, joined us on Gabe’s birthday right here in St. Paul, Minnesota for our flagship 5K event + 9 pop-up locations across the USA and virtual participants from as far away as Sweden and Germany! All together we raised more than $50,000 for rare cancer research!

Thank you to everyone who showed up, donated, and celebrated with us. Whether you walked, ran, or simply enjoyed the festivities, your participation supports our mission to fund critical research for finding more effective treatments for rare cancer. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for each and every member of our brave community.
