National Nonprofit Day celebrates the people who turn a mission into action.

A Charlie Cart does not create change on its own. Educators, librarians, and community partners bring every lesson to life. Donors and funding partners help equip and support these trusted adults with a mobile kitchen, curriculum, training, and resources to teach kids to cook with confidence. That impact continues beyond one lesson. Kids carry new skills home, educators reach new groups, and community spaces become places where Food Education can grow.

Educators, are you getting ready to bring Charlie Cart back into the classroom, library, or community space?

A little preparation can help the first lesson feel welcoming, organized, and fun for everyone. Revisit the curriculum, choose an approachable recipe, prepare the tools and ingredients, and make sure every student has a meaningful way to participate. Most importantly, save time to taste, talk, and celebrate. That is often where confidence begins to grow.

Charlie Cart members can find recipes, lesson plans, training, and additional resources in the member portal. What lesson are you excited to teach first?

With food education in the mix, back-to-school means more than pencils and notebooks.

Learning how to wash produce, read a recipe, measure ingredients, and prepare a simple meal gives kids practical skills they can use for life. Food education also brings math, science, literacy, teamwork, and confidence into one hands-on lesson.

Some of the sweetest learning starts right at the library!

Margaret Woodruff, Library Director at Charlotte Library, manages the library, leads adult programs, develops collections, and brings people together through food education. What motivates her most is how preparing food creates space for connection and conversation about what we eat and why.

Her favorite recipe to teach with the Charlie Cart is applesauce, made from fruit picked from a tree on the library green. For Margaret, it brings so many parts of the Charlie Cart story together, from local ingredients to hands-on learning to the simple joy of making something delicious as a community.

Thank you, Margaret, for showing how libraries can be places where food, learning, and connection grow together.

When school is out, food access and food learning still matter. USDA summer nutrition programs help fill the gap, with no-cost meals and snacks for kids and teens at schools, parks, and neighborhood sites through the Summer Food Service Program, also called SUN Meals, and Summer EBT or SUN Bucks helping eligible families buy groceries during the summer.

At Charlie Cart, we believe Food Education belongs in summer too. Community programs can help kids stay nourished, curious, and connected all season long.
