JCRC's podcast, Lema'an, is inspired by Deuteronomy 16:20, one of the most quoted verses in Jewish justice-oriented spaces:

צֶ֥דֶק צֶ֖דֶק תִּרְדֹּ֑ף לְמַ֤עַן תִּֽחְיֶה֙ וְיָרַשְׁתָּ֣ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ

Most people only quote the first part of the verse, leaving out the critical context that God calls on us to pursue justice so that we may thrive in the land of Israel. Our project seeks to reclaim the full verse in its context. Our hosts center the question of purpose as we consider our role as Jews who feel compelled toward the needs of the Jewish people as well as the needs of all humanity.

Welcome to Lema'an, a JCRC podcast which invites educators, journalists, rabbis, artists, and civic leaders as guests to wrestle with our biggest questions: purpose, pluralism, and peoplehood. Season 1 will focus on the tension in Jewish thinking and ethics between the "universal" and the "particular."

As defined by Rabbi Shai Held:
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Particular = family first. Not family only, but family first.
🌍 Universal = responsibility to everyone, or even prioritizing the vulnerable who are not necessarily family – the orphan, the widow, the stranger.

🪢 How do we hold that tension faithfully? We’ll look at how Jews have wrestled with this question across history, and how we’re trying to resist the pull toward polarized, one-sided thinking.

Today marks three years since Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The horror and trauma of this day, and the war that followed, have forever changed what it means to be part of Am Yisrael for Jews from Israel to Minnesota and everywhere else.

And today we are launching the JCRC podcast, Lema’an. Inspired by the Hebrew concept of purpose, Lema'an strives to share meaningful learning and discussion, to bring honor to the Jewish people and to all those who engage in the sacred work of lifting our community.

We dedicate this project to the memory of the victims of October 7th and pray that their memories will continue to be an inspiration and a blessing to all of us.

Apply to join the Ko’ach Advocacy Fellowship for Minnesota college students, and build the skills, relationships, and Ko’ach (strength) to advocate on campus!

Fellows will co-develop a shared advocacy agenda and gain practical experience engaging with campus administrators and political leaders. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a $1,000 stipend.
