Thank you to everyone who came out to visit us at City Fest 2026! It was our pleasure connecting with so many community members and sharing more about our mission, our vision, and the work we hope to accomplish.

Community is at the heart of everything we do, and creating a space for those whose voices often go unheard is why Take A Step Forward began in the first place. Every conversation, connection, and show of support reminds us why this work matters.

We’re grateful to everyone who stopped by, listened, asked questions, and took the time to learn more about our mission. Together, we can continue taking steps toward stronger families, second chances, and a stronger community. ❤️

🇺🇸 September 11 — We Remember.

Today, we remember September 11, 2001 — the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the brave first responders who ran toward danger to save their community.

We remember the courage, compassion, and humanity that brought people together during one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history. We remember the strangers who became neighbors, the communities that stood together, and the countless acts of kindness that reminded us of the strength we have in one another.

May we honor their memory not only by remembering this day, but by continuing to show up for one another, care for our communities, and remind those around us that they matter, they are loved, and they are never alone.

We remember. We honor and we stand together. 🤍🇺🇸

Fatherhood doesn't end at release — and we have a place to prove it.

We've been working relentlessly to create a safe space for previously incarcerated fathers as they persevere towards re-buildings their lives and relationships with their children.

We're in the process of setting the house up, and we need your help furnishing it: Mattresses, bedding, dressers, along with hygiene and household essentials are welcomed and deeply appreciated.

Take A Step Forward is excited to be joining the 2026 NAMIWalks Minnesota at Minnehaha Falls Regional Park on Saturday, September 26! Together, we'll walk to raise awareness, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and remind our community that no one has to walk their journey alone.

Whether you're walking in support of yourself, a loved one, or simply because you believe everyone deserves access to mental health resources—we'd love to see you there! 💙💚

As we continue to work hard behind the scenes to launch our halfway house for previously incarcerated fathers, we want to remind others why we love what we do here at Take A Step Forward and how our mission drives us in what we do. Here’s a message from our founder:

"I love what I do because I believe everyone deserves someone who believes in them. Serving others has always been at the heart of my journey—from working in emergency and psychiatric care to volunteering in our community. Those experiences showed me that too many fathers leaving incarceration are trying to rebuild their lives without the support they need.

That's why I founded Take A Step Forward. Our mission is to help previously incarcerated fathers reconnect with their children, rebuild their futures, and find hope through community, advocacy, and opportunity."

HONORING JUNETEENTH: A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM, RESILIENCE & HOPE

🖤❤️💚 Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the enduring strength, perseverance, and contributions of Black communities throughout history.

At Take A Step Forward, we believe in the power of second chances, healing, and creating pathways toward brighter futures. As we reflect on the significance of freedom and justice, we remain committed to supporting individuals and families as they rebuild their lives through community advocacy and support.

Let us continue to celebrate black excellence, uplift one another and work toward a future where every person has the support and resources they need to thrive.

A father's past does not determine a child's future. What matters most is meaningful involvement.

Research shows that it is not just father presence but consistent emotional and practical involvement that predicts better academic, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for children. In cases of incarceration, maintaining even limited contact can help reduce some of the negative impacts associated with separation.

For fathers returning from incarceration, rebuilding that connection can be one of the most life-changing and powerful steps for both parent and child. 💛

This Memorial Day Weekend, we honor those who served, sacrificed, and fought for the people they love while honoring the value of family, sacrifice, and rebuilding. ❤️

But we also want to recognize the families quietly carrying battles of their own — Fathers rebuilding after incarceration, children waiting for stability, and communities working toward healing because we believe second chances matter.
We believe fathers deserve the opportunity to return home and become pillars in their families again.

While many spend this weekend celebrating freedom, we’re reminded that true freedom also looks like:
• stable housing
• mental health support
• recovery resources
• employment opportunities
• and a community that refuses to give up on people

Programs focused on:

• employment
• addiction recovery
• mental health support
• education
• and family connection

have been shown to lower reoffending rates and help families and communities heal.

That’s why we’re working hard to launch our halfway house right here in Minneapolis, MN📍 — a safe place where formerly incarcerated fathers can come to heal, grow, rebuild, and reconnect without judgment.
