One Voice. One Movement. One Pie.

As we celebrate Black Philanthropy Month this year, we remember the gift that is this great community we are connected to. One that shows up to answer the call, one that heals through love and compassion for our neighbor, one that shares stories of others great works and honors them through the acts of baketivism. We are a community of action, of togetherness, and we have a voice.

If the ability to give is yours, you are helping support:

🫂Healing: Response to racial trauma/crisis with story circles and group bakes that bring together people from all backgrounds; uplifting and honoring community heroes with the sweet potato comfort pie; special healing retreats and story-circle “tea parties” — facilitated conversations that celebrate the Black cultural tradition of tea houses and tea ceremonies.

🥧Live community-building events: Our two largest annual events are the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service in January and our summer Jubilee in Celebration of Juneteenth. These events bring people together to celebrate and advance Dr. King’s beautiful dream of Beloved Community.

🗣️Speaker series that amplify diverse voices and perspectives

📷The arts: Our original photo exhibit, Character Values: Upholding Our Beloved Community, honors diverse community heroes who have been active in racial justice and healing.

📚The Rose Service Scholar Cohort is a mutual-mentorship program that connects Black and youth and elders around the arts. Elders break isolation and gain connection while youth focus on areas of resiliency, healing and creativity.

HUGE thank you to Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder for this wonderful article highlighting the importance of the play "Kumbayah The Juneteenth Story", written by Rose McGee.

Read personal takes from Rose and the cast on how the play resonates now, shapes identity, and its impact on the future in how we continue to persevere in the fight for our freedoms.

“We saw George Floyd, we’ve seen Trayvon Martin, we’ve seen Daunte Wright … being killed simply because they may not be in compliance with what somebody thinks is the right thing to be in compliance with,” she continued. “People weren’t allowed in the [era of the] play … and even now, to exercise any right of freedom.”

Rose McGee's "Kumbayah The Juneteenth Story" turns 30, with cast members linking its history to Operation Metro Surge and George Floyd.

Read the College of Liberal Arts | University of Minnesota story: "Juneteenth Then and Now" covering the play Kumbayah The Juneteenth Story written by Rose McGee.

We are so grateful to have had such a strong partner as College of Liberal Arts | University of Minnesota.

We are only a few days away from the 30 year Anniversary performance! Still need to register? Hit the link in the comments.

It has now been 30 years since the play Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story was written to educate viewers on the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, a painful but important part of history. After all this time, the words of playwright and community leader Rose McGee from our 2023 story hold even truer:

“The intent of all of it is to strengthen [participants’] understanding of what Juneteenth is today, not just as a thing of the past. The play is still relevant in many ways, even more so today.”

Our story highlights the important role Associate Professor Adam Bledsoe played in reviving this story after seeing it for the first time at age eleven. Bledsoe's 2022-2023 "Juneteenth Then and Now" residency with the Liberal Arts Engagement Hub and partnership with McGee continue to help people understand the significance of this moment in history.
