HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL DISABILITY CONFERENCE 🤝

We wrapped up two powerful days of collaboration with Bethel University and Cherkasy National University in Ukraine. This wasn’t just another conference — it was a hands-on exchange of practical strategies for supporting families raising children with disabilities in the middst of war.

Why does this matter right now?

Families in Ukraine are navigating something most of us can barely imagine — raising a child with a disability while living under constant threat, displacement, and loss. Access to specialists is limited. The pressure on parents and teachers is overwhelming. Our goal was simple: give people real tools that work when traditional systems have broken down.

What we covered:

Five strategic areas led by international experts:

— Inclusive Education — Dr. Katie Bonawitz and Dr. Anna Krull shared evidence-based approaches for supporting children with autism, dyslexia, and PTSD in classroom settings.

— Trauma-Informed Care — Dr. Dianna Towns walked through how to integrate trauma-informed practices into both education and everyday family life.

— Psychological Resilience — Dr. Peg McCormick presented the science of hope and practical pathways to recovery after loss.

— Social Integration — Dr. Mary Lindell provided tools to help isolated families rebuild community connections.

These aren’t theoretical frameworks. They are actionable solutions that participants are already bringing back to their schools, communities, and homes. By combining global expertise with the real Ukrainian context, we’re helping build a support system where it’s needed most.

We’re grateful to share that Shepherd’s Foundation held the Second Annual Disability Conference, in partnership with Bethel University and Cherkasy National University.

🕊️ «Instilling Hope & Providing Strategies for Those Affected by Disability»

In Ukraine, the challenges of raising a child with disability are intensified by war — disrupted routines, limited access to care, and constant uncertainty. Thousands of families carry this weight every single day. Through these two days, we wanted every family to know: you are not alone. And alongside the weight, there is resilience. There is love. And there is real hope that things can be better.

Students, families, educators, psychologists, social workers, and advocates from Ukraine and around the world came together to learn, connect, and be equipped. Eight sessions explored trauma-informed care, resilience, inclusion, disability rights, and the science of hope — bringing together both research and real-life experience.

Our speakers:
🔹 Dr. Katie Bonawitz — Fulbright Scholar, Associate Dean at Bethel University
🔹 Dr. Dianna Towns — trauma-informed care & Ukrainian Institute of Trauma Therapy
🔹 Dr. Anna Krull — autism, dyslexia & ADHD assessments, born in Cherkasy
🔹 Dr. Mary Lindell — special education, international speaker & mother of a child with Down syndrome
🔹 Dr. Peg McCormick — neuroscience of hope & recovery after loss
🔹 Ukrainian scholars from Cherkasy National University — special education, social work & educational leadership

We invite you to pray with us. 🙏

Give thanks that this conference happened — that these voices came together and hope was spoken over people who so often feel unseen.

Pray for every participant — that what was heard would take root and bring lasting change in their lives, families, classrooms, and communities. Pray that God would continue working through each speaker far beyond these two days. And pray that every word finds the right heart — and bears fruit in the months ahead.

🙏 Pray for ministries in Ukraine

Our Ukraine ministries bring hope, healing, and renewal to children and adults facing life’s toughest challenges in various contexts. We invite you to lift these programs in your prayers:

Camp Possible:
For several years, this program has empowered Ukrainian women living with limb loss, offering opportunities for creativity, teamwork, and personal growth. The next program is scheduled for May of 2026 and we are expecting new women to join the team.
*Pray for lasting joy, renewed confidence, and courage to embrace new achievements.

Veteran’s Programs:
This ministry provides comprehensive support to veterans and their families, including counseling, physical rehabilitation, mental and spiritual support, career advice, legal guidance and much more.
*Pray for deep spiritual, emotional and physical healing, strong families, and wisdom for every team member serving these people.

Camp ministry:
Focused on children and youth, Camp Maximum creates safe spaces for growth, mentorship, and guidance. The 2026 camp season starts in April.
*Pray for protection, encouragement, and meaningful impact on every child who attends. Support the team in Ukraine as they tackle the challenges of life in Ukraine and get ready for this next season.

Planned and intentional prayers have such a strong impact! Together we can lift up those whose courage and resilience inspire us every day. Thank you for standing faithful with the ministries of the Shepherd’s Foundation!💛

🇺🇦 Veteran retreats at Camp Maximum are more than just programs - they are spaces of restoration, healing, and renewed purpose.

As Ukraine continues to carry the weight of war, the need for deep, relational support for veterans and their families is growing across the entire nation. Today, churches across Ukraine are filled with families whose husbands, wives, sons, and daughters are serving on the frontlines. The social fabric of the country has changed and with it, the role of the Church and local communities.

This is why developing intentional, family-oriented ministry is so important now.
In response, Shepherd’s Foundation is partnering nationwide with the Ministry of Social Policy, interdenominational chaplaincy groups, local government administrations and churches to help build a sustainable, faith-informed support system for veterans and their families.
At the regional level in Central Ukraine, this vision is being actively developed together with the Cherkasy Military Administration and local partners creating a model of care that connects residential retreats with ongoing, community-based support through veteran hubs, local churches and veteran organisations.

These retreats at Camp Maximum are a key part of that model. Here, we create a safe, caring, and strengthening environment where veterans can reflect on their journey and find steady ground alongside others who truly understand. This is the starting point in their recovery.

During these retreats, veterans:
• rediscover meaning, identity, and inner balance;
• restore and strengthen family relationships;
• spend meaningful, healing time with their children and partners;
• build a supportive community with those who share similar experiences;
• gain the confidence and clarity to move forward.

Each retreat is a powerful reminder that a sincere atmosphere, mutual respect, and compassionate, faith-centered guidance can gently yet profoundly change lives.

🇺🇦 Supporting Ukrainian specialists with PTSD training

Representatives from communities across the region participated in an intensive 5-day training on PTSD support for veterans and their families. The course combined theoretical learning, practical exercises, and supervision sessions to strengthen the skills of local mental health professionals.

The training was led by 8 experienced American specialists, including Dr. Grant Jones, creator of the Jones Trauma Model, who has extensive international experience supporting veterans and trauma survivors. Alongside professional excellence, the team served with a deep sense of compassion and faith—bringing not only knowledge, but also care, encouragement, and hope.

Participants were equipped with evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches and received certificates upon completion.

This program was organized in partnership with Veteran Pro Center, Cherkasy Military Administration, Cherkasy Medical Academy, and the National “How are You?” Mental Health Program as part of Ukraine’s nationwide initiative to create veteran support spaces in every community.

đź’Ş Strengthening mental health support for regional specialists and building bridges between local churches and new veteran hubs is one of our key strategic priorities for 2026.

Your support helps us continue this work and provide critical care for those affected by the unjust Russian aggression in Ukraine.

American Team Arrives to Help Ukraine’s veterans and specialists

The war in Ukraine leaves deep physical and emotional scars. Last fall, a team of experienced American psychologists and counselors first visited Camp Maximum, working alongside Ukrainian rehabilitation specialists, psychiatrists, family therapists, and chaplains to support Ukrainian veterans and their families in their recovery.

Seeing the ongoing need, the team returned this winter to lead an intensive 5-day training.

Through both individual and group sessions, Ukrainian specialists received practical tools to process trauma, rebuild resilience, and regain inner balance. This partnership shows that healing truly knows no borders.

When basic needs are not met, even childhood becomes a challenge.

This February, we had the privilege of welcoming nearly 120 children and caregivers from an orphanage in the Mykolayiv region to Camp Maximum. Their community had been facing constant power outages and unreliable heating during extreme winter cold (down to -4°F / -20°C).

The principal reached out with a simple but urgent request:
Could you provide a warm and safe place for the children?

Because of your support, the answer was yes.

For 10 days, Camp Maximum became a place of warmth, stability, and care.
A place where children could rest, laugh, play, and simply be kids again.
They took part in activities, built friendships, and experienced something many had been missing — a sense of normal, peaceful childhood.

Thank you for making stories like this possible 🤍

This winter reminded us how much we depend on God—and each other 💛

As we step into spring, we’re looking back with grateful hearts. This winter wasn’t easy. Our team in Ukraine lived through days without power, without heat, and moments when everything felt uncertain.

But even in the middle of it, we saw so much God and good.

Because of your support, Camp Maximum stayed a place of warmth, light, and care—for orphaned children, veterans, and families who needed it most. Together, we made it through the cold days and long nights.

We’re so thankful. Truly.

Thank you for being with us through it all. Please continue to keep Ukraine in your prayers. 🙏

🔥 Meet Sasha — the powerhouse goalkeeper of Ukraine’s National Amputee Football Team.
Strong, driven, and full of energy, she’s the kind of teammate who lifts everyone around her.

At the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, she found herself in the Netherlands — far from home, yet still chasing her dream. Sport became her bridge back to Ukraine, to purpose, and to her team.
Now she’s back on the field, helping other young women discover their strength and confidence through movement.

🎥 In this interview, Sasha shares how joining the team changed her life — how faith, friendship, and the game itself helped her rebuild strength from the inside out.

✨ Through her story, and others like hers, Camp Possible continues to reveal what transformation looks like when courage is fueled by faith and community — and hope finds its way back home.
