This past week 4 of our members from two different companies attended the bargaining conference… so much good information was given and we hope it helps them in their contract negotiations this year!

The factory floor fell silent on December 30, 1936, but not because work had stopped. General Motors autoworkers in Flint, Michigan had made a decision that would echo through American history. They sat down at their stations and refused to leave.

Walking out meant risking everything. GM could replace them all within days. But staying inside the Fisher Body Plant meant something different entirely. The workers locked themselves in and turned the factory into their fortress.

For 44 days, car seats became beds. The assembly line became a battleground of wills. Police arrived with tear gas, trying to force them out. Yet the workers held firm against one of the world's largest corporations.

Their demand was simple: recognition of their union. Their method was one of the boldest labor actions in American history. They understood that walking out could leave them vulnerable to replacement, so they chose a different path.

The stand remained peaceful yet unyielding. Day after day, the autoworkers faced down pressure from GM while sleeping on the very car seats they had been building. The corporation that seemed untouchable found itself in a standoff with its own employees.

GM eventually conceded. The 44-day sit-in had protected their jobs and won union recognition. But the victory reached far beyond Flint, Michigan. The strike changed labor history and set a precedent for collective action, worker solidarity, and fair treatment across industries.

The Flint sit-down strike is remembered as a landmark moment in culture and heritage. It showed that courage, unity, and strategy can empower ordinary people to reshape society. Meaningful change often comes from persistence and willingness to act together.

On that December day in 1936, the workers discovered something powerful. Sometimes the most effective way to stand up is to sit down and refuse to move.

Bosses and CEOs can’t expect loyalty from workers when they’re not willing to give it in return. That’s why we have to hold them accountable and demand fair treatment. 👊
